No Dashra held in Kashmir, effigies not set on fire, good fails to vanquish evil

Srinagar, October 19, (Scoop News)-After several years of celebrations, the effigies of Ravana, Kumbkaran and Meghnath could not be lit this year due to state government’s indifference and because of shutdown call given by the separatist over killings in downtown area of the capital city on Wednesday.

According to reports, Pandits residing in Kashmir had sought permission from the Governor’s administration for celebration of Dashera in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, but there was no response from the Raj Bhavan till Thursday morning. “We feel completely isolated and unwanted during the Governor’s rule,” Pandits allege.

Before the onset of insurgency, Dashera was being celebrated in Kashmir valley with religious fervor, devotion and keenness. A procession led by a chariot carrying Lord Ram, his wife Sita and younger brother Laxman and pulled by believers, would commence from Sheetal Nath and meander through various routes of the city before culminating at Hozori Bagh where three effigies were used to be set on fire after traditional prayers in presence of a large gathering of people. A boys’ band of Hindu High School, Sheetal Nath, used to be the part of the march, playing tunes on their flutes of different devotional songs.

A special enclosure was being set up for VIP’s including Governor, chief minister, ministers and top bureaucrats besides police officers then for clear viewing of the event. At the end, people from the crowd would rush towards burning effigies to collect half burnt bamboo sticks and carry them to their homes as a ‘souvenir’.

Meanwhile, special havans were organized at Badri Kali in Kupwara district, Sheikhpora in Badgam district and Ram Chander Temple at Sathu Barbarshah in Srinagar district where scores of devotees offered their prayers on Mahanavmi, the concluding day of Navratras.
