announcement likely to be made soon.

Leh(Ladakh), November 17, (Scoop News)-The state administration is actively considering to set up a fully fledged university in Ladakh region and the decision in this regard is likely to be announced soon, well informed sources indicated.

Last week, the students had held protest and also sponsored a shutdown call in Leh district demanding establishment of a separate university in the region. Students pursuing their higher studies outside Ladakh region also supported their demand, held protests in Jammu and highlighted gross discrimination against the region.

Interestingly, Scoop News had highlighted the demand of the protesting students seeking a separate university in Ladakh region in its edition on November 9.

Incidentally, Kashmir valley spread over an area of 14, 577 square Kilometre has five fully fledged university and a National Institute of Technology (NIT) while Jammu region has six fully fledged universities, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and an Indian Institute of Management (IIM).

Ladakh region having a geographic area of 64, 332 sq Km with nearly three hundred thousand population has been deprived of a separate university over the years by the successive regimes. Barring five degree colleges which are affiliated to Kashmir University were set up during past nearly two decades and are affiliated to Kashmir University.

However, Kashmir University has set up its two satellite campuses in the twin border districts of Leh and Kargil but the same does not serve the purpose of the students due to delay in holding of examination and declaring of results on time and thus forcing these students to undertake their studies outside the region.

Thousands of students from Leh and Kargil districts are at present pursuing their higher studies away from their native places in Jammu, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bangaluru and elsewhere. The parents of these students are facing real brunt who are compelled to maintain two separate households besides affording tuition fee of their wards.
