BRO paving vehicular road link between Diskit and DBO, a stretch carved out of glaciated area,
also traverses world’s highest motorable pass.

Leh(Ladakh), November 19, (Scoop News)_While connecting Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO)military base in eastern Ladakh bordering China, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) claims to be carving out the world’s first vehicular road in the region by cutting glaciated area.
The road starts from Nobra valley and is the shortest available road link to DBO.
According to a press statement issued by BRO, the road is being constructed under the Project Himank of the organization. It will pass through world’s highest glaciers in the region.
“Being constructed at an altitude of 17,800 feet above the sea level, the road from Sasoma to Saser La will be a vital link paved over glaciers, which are unstable and constantly keep changing their physical nature,” the release added.
The 54 kilometres stretch of the road which passes over the glaciated area is almost completed and it was the most difficult stretch of the road. Another 50 km road under construction at present will connect it with BBO, it said,
Because of the challenges posed by the glaciers and the presence of moraines in the area, the construction of the road is significant due to vagaries of the weather including constant shifting of the glaciers, threat of avalanches and crevasses while carrying out construction works.
“We can’t stop shifting of glaciers or opening of crevasses but due to commitment of our personnel and strategic requirement on the ground, the works is being carried out despite several impediments. The construction of these strategic roads in hostile high altitude areas is possible due to team work of personnel, resources, training and medical facilities besides better equipment available in the organization,” the statement said.
“It is a Herculean task to carry out the construction work when glaciers keep on shifting constantly as snow melts. The temperature in the area dips to 50* C below the freezing point in winter and hovers around 12* C during peak summer months,” it said.
With a limited working season, the BRO officials are making prior preparation and framing a working strategy to achieve its targets within the available duration. In achieving the targets, BRO has adopted the strategy of optimum utilization of the limited working period by using effective management of manpower and resources to overcome any difficulty.
“The entire planning for future assignment is being discussed months ahead of the commencement of the work on the ground,” they said.
