Mehbooba’s statement on ‘divisional’ status to Ladakh infuriates people
accuse her of scuttling genuine demand of region.

Leh(Ladakh), December 8, (Scoop News)-Cutting across the party lines, the leaders of Ladakh feel disgruntled over the statement in which Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief, Mehbooba Mufti, has opposed the reported plan of according ‘divisional status’ to the region by the Governor’s administration.

“Most unfortunate and highly condemnable statement made by a former chief minister who claimed to be the lead of the entire state without any prejudice to any region. We are surprised to see that how a party chief has been expressing her dislike for the decentralization of power by opposing the proposed move of granting of a divisional status to Ladakh,” said a former lawmaker, Tsering Samphel.

“Those talking about regional autonomy and changing of territorial boundaries within or of self rule are dangerous for the region and the people of Ladakh will resist the same with equal force and might,” he added.

Echoing the similar feelings, senior Congress leader and former minister, Nawang Rigzin Jora, accused Mehbooba Mufti of scuttling the genuine demand of the people. However, we will never let her succeed in her nefarious designs, he said while responding to media queries.

“LAHDC-Leh too had demanded divisional status for the region,” recalled Jora .

Another former lawmaker, Asgar Ali Qarbalai, termed Mehbooba’s statement as highly provocative and incomprehensible. “Area wise, we form the largest region of the entire state,” he told reporters.

Former lawmaker from the region, Ghulam Raza, also termed the statement of PDP chief as ridiculous and disappointing. “How does this move (granting of divisional status to Ladakh region) harm her and her party. Why should she feel unhappy, if the administrative power is being decentralized,” he pointed out.

Former minister and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil, Feroz Khan, felt that her statement has exposed her dichotomy and exhibited her apathy toward the region.

“This is our old demand in Kargil district but her (Mufti’s) remarks obviously does justify the struggle of people in Leh for Union Territory (UT) status or trifurcation of the state,” he said in an interaction with media. ...
