Congress and PDP spar over ‘divisional’ status to Ladakh region
both parties put forth their respective arguments in a slanging match

Jammu, December 12, (Scoop News)-The squabble between Congress and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the ‘divisional’ status to Ladakh region has intensified after two political parties accused each other of ‘communalizing’ the proposed move of the Governor’s administration.

On Tuesday former Union Minister and Congress leader, Dr Karan Singh, strongly supported the demand for grant of a separate division for the region and termed PDP chief, Mehbooba Mufti’s statement as ‘unfortunate’.

In a statement issued in Jammu, Dr Singh said ‘historically, culturally, geographically and administratively, Ladakh has always been a special area which needed full attention and “I fully support the demand of Autonomous Hill Development Councils of both Leh and Kargil which have demanded separate division for Ladakh region.”

“I can vouch for the fact that historically, geographically, culturally and administratively Ladakh has always been a special area which deserves special attention,” asserted Dr Singh.

He termed Mehbooba’s attempt to link the issue with some Pahari areas of Jammu ‘an unfortunate effort’ to divide Jammu on communal lines. Mehbooba’s remarks are not only wrong in itself but has no connection with the demand of the region.

“I hope the Governor will take cognizance of this,” Congress leader said.

Lashing out at Dr Singh’s for his remarks about PDP chief of trying to break up Jammu, PDP charged the Congress leader to be playing to galleries.

In a statement, PDP spokesperson, Rafi Ahmed Mir, said pleading for empowerment of the backward areas of any region is not ‘communal’.

“The PDP has been premier of empowering Ladakh and creating Hill Development Council for Kargil but it never attracted criticism of being communal.

“When we talk of giving similar treatment to Pir Panjal and Chenab regions, why should a leader of his (Dr Singh’s) stature smell the rat? In all three regions Ladakh, Pir Panjal and Chenab, the population spread is mixed representation of people of different faiths.

“If it is not breaking up one region, why should it amount to same now in these regions of Pir Pajal and Chenab,” Mir asked and said PDP will continue to follow the roadmap of equitable development of the state that has been laid down by its founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and its special focus will be on backward areas of Ladakh, Pir Panjal and Chenab region.
