Alcoholism abuse a greatest threat to the Ladakhi society: Jamyang Tsering

Leh, February 13 (Scoop News)- Considering alcoholism abuse a greatest threat to the Ladakhi society, Chhoski Donmay society in collaboration with Ladakh Gonpa Association, LBA Women’s Wing and Medical Social Service Association organized a grand convention at Leh Bazar today against the growing menace of alcohol mainly among the younger generations.

The convention was attended by representatives of all religious, political and social organizations and took a resolution to collectively fight against such nuisance.
To celebrate the achievement of Divisional status for Ladakh, a musical programme was also jointly held with the anti alcohol campaign.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Leh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal (JTN) was the chief guest on the occasion while as representatives from LBA, Anjuman Immamia, Injuman Moin-ul-Islam, Moravian Mission and all political parties attended the campaign.

In order to ensure a secured, healthy and better future for Ladakh and its posterity, the time has come to work together by all sections to find realistic means for complete ban on alcohol and use of other health hazard items in the society. This was stated by Jamyang Tsering Namgyal while addressing a mammoth gathering at Leh market today. Quoting Lord Buddha’s teaching and His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s words for completely giving up the alcohol, JTN said that it is very odd thing to see that many people do not following the teachings of Buddhism and consuming alcohol at large scale. CEC said that Leh itself has 30 wine shops and Bars consuming liquor worth crores of rupees that largely contributes in destroying and weakening the society both financially and physically. In such a shocking situation, a greater responsibility lies on each and every Ladakhis to contribute for banning alcohol in the society and lead Ladakh towards a healthy and bright future, he added. JT Namgyal further said that on the basis of complaints and considering the widespread negative impact of alcohol on the society, LAHDC has already took up the matter with the Governor, J&K seeking initiatives to close all existing wine shops and Bars in Leh district, adding that LAHDC would further take up this serious matter with the Prime Minister also.
In the meantime, CEC once again greeted the people of Ladakh on addressing the demand of divisional status for Ladakh and highlighted the benefits of this status. He credited dynamic leaders of Ladakh headed by former MP Thupstan Chewang for this great achievement.
The other speakers have also strongly urged for complete ban on sale of liquor and cancellation of licenses of liquor vending shops in Leh district keeping in mind huge destruction and losses to the society. Moreover, they highlighted alcohol related diseases and issues like cancer, crime, quarrels, homicide, accident, break up in families and many other problems. Some of the speakers have also urged upon promoting moral education at all the school level.
To mark the occasion, a musical programme highlighting the negative impact of alcohol and drugs abuse also held where the prominent singers of Ladakh headed by Dorjey Stakmo sung on the occasion.
