Meeting cum Sensitization on NTCP held at Budgam
DDC Budgam calls for holistic plan formulation to control the menace of tobacco use

Budgam,May -16 (Scoop News)- District Level Coordination Meeting cum Sensitization workshop for district heads of government departments, civil society members and other stakeholders under National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) was held today at New Conference Hall Budgam.

The programme was organized by Health department. On the occasion, CMO Budgam, Dr. Nazeer Ahmad specified the objectives of the meeting cum workshop, while as Dr. Rehana Kousar through power point presentation spoke thoroughly on burden of tobacco use in India and J&K, COTPA-2003, NTCP and Role and Responsibilities of various departments on tobacco control. She briefed about the key activities at district level and availability of cessation facilities at the district hospital, IEC activities, training of key stakeholders and school programmes.

The meeting was informed that 7 million people die due to consumption of tobacco products globally and 1 million die in India yearly as India is the 2nd largest consumer and 3rd largest producer of tobacco.

The meeting discussed means to curb the menace of tobacco in the district threadbare.

District Development Commissioner, Budgam Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar who presided over the programme instructed concerned to carry out holistic and comprehensive set of activities as provided in COTPA act to curb the menace across the district particularly following department-wise activities strictly as provided in the guidelines of the programme. Stressing on intensified challaning of violators she directed concerned to work in synergy to bring improvement in curbing tobacco consumption in the district. She asked for installing signages at public places and government offices for awareness of hazardous impact on human health due to use of tobacco products. She instructed on intensifying mass awareness through media and urged school authorities to involve schools and colleges in the awareness campaigns. The DDC also directed CEO Budgam and CMO Budgam to jointly organize No Tobacco Day programmes at all schools for better results. Among others, the programme was attended by DIO Budgam, Showkat Hussain Ganai, DEPO, Farooq Ahmad Raina, Dy.SP Headquarter Feroz Yehya, Block Nodal Officers, Medical Officers, representatives of NGOs and other concerned.
