Student Martyrs’ Day-Panthers Party leaders & others participate in Student Martyrs’ Day after 55 years

Jammu, October 18 (Scoop News)- Bhim Singh, the then student leader, presently President of J&K National Panthers Party was among the leading participants to participate in the Student Martyrs Day in Jammu today.
The Students' Congress led by Prof Bhim Singh was demanding establishment of Jammu University, technical education colleges, an ayurvedic college and upgrade of agricultural graduates at par with MBBS and engineering graduates.
The students had launched a movement under the leadership of Bhim Singh. Three students Brij Mohan, Subhash Chandra and Gulshan Handa were killed on GGM college premises whereas a student leader, Gurcharan Singh, was killed on October 18, 1966, in Kanak Mandi, Jammu, when a students' procession was marching through the streets of Jammu.
Senior superintendent police who shot Gurcharan Singh had in fact aimed at Bhim Singh, leader of the students’ movement, but a senior officer from district administration, MP Khosla, intervened and saved Bhim Singh.
Mr. MP Khosla has also served as chief secretary of J&K in 1987-88. It was because of the intervention of Indira Gandhi, the then prime minister that a commission of inquiry was set up, which held several police officers and heads of administration in Jammu responsible for genocide of students. More than 53 students were injured in the science college.
The then President of Commerce College, Jammu, Mr. P.K. Ganju and President of Ayurvedic College, Mr. Mehta were also present in the Student Martyrs’ Day after 55 years of this tragic firing. Several students, youth organizations, student federations and NPSU were also actively participating in Student Martyrs’ Day.
