National IP Festival inaugurated at CSIR-IIIM, Jammu

Jammu, July 17 (Scoop News)- Under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) to mark the 75 years of India’s Independence, CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) Jammu has launched the week long celebrations of National Intellectual Property Festival-NIPF (Rastriya Boudhik Sampada Mahotshav).

On first day of celebration today, one day IP Pharma Conference was organized at main campus of institute which was attended by Scientists, Technocrats, Scholars and Students. Dr Vibha Malhotra Sawhney, Head Technology Management Directorate (TMD) and Innovation Protection Unit (IPU), CSIR while delivering the key note address, has highlighted the importance of different type of IPR’s, trends of patents filed and granted in India in the last 05 years. She has provided insights on various technology transfers done by CSIR-IIIM & other CSIR Labs by leveraging the Intellectual Property.

Dr Mahendra B Thakre, AVP& Senior Legal Counsel, Viatris, Hyderabad delivered a detailed session on Unveiling the Power of Safeguarding Inventions through Intellectual Property Rights. In his session he has provided deep insights on drafting of different types of claims of Pharmaceutical Inventions. Patentable aspects of Traditional medicines, herbal products, biotechnological & Microbiological Inventions.
Dr Lipika Patnaik, Principal Scientist, CSIR- Innovation Protection Unit (IPU) has delivered an online lecture on the requirements of patentability. While patentability standards provide the framework for determining eligibility, it is essential to consider the broader societal implications of granting patents.
Dr Kokkirala Tejkumar, IP Lead, BDR group of companies Baroda, Gujarat, has mentioned the importance of lead compound identification while invalidating a product patent in USA.
It was informed that around 280 participants inclusive of Scientists, Technical Staff, Research Scholars & project Staff physically participated in this event & 380 Participants attended online.

Earlier Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director of CSIR-IIIM in his welcome address, has given a brief account of the day wise events planned during the six days IP Festival program from July 17-24, 2023 being held at various locations of Jammu, Srinagar & Leh. He emphasized the importance of value creation using Intellectual Property and said that Intellectual Property is our ideas and innovation and required to be protected to convert the same into the assets. He further informed that the celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) to mark 75 years of India’s Independence is continued until August 2023. As part of the AKAM celebrations, CSIR & DSIR, CSIR-IIM is to conduct AKAM campaigns focused at IPR aligned to the thematic objectives of ATMANIRBHARTA. The campaign shall be a focused time bound, target led initiative to increase patent, Gl trademark, copyright registration etc., aligned with the central thought that legal ownership’ of ideas/ Inventions/traditions/practices are critical to enabling ATMANIRBHARTA to grow roots in the society.

Dr Kancherla Prasad, the convenor of the program has briefed about the crucial role of intellectual property in Pharma industry in shaping the landscape of innovation and healthcare. He has stated that IP is the driving force behind groundbreaking discoveries, life-saving medications, and transformative therapies that improve the quality of life for millions of people around the world.

Prominent among others attended the Conference were Dr Asha Chaubey, Dr Sumit Gandhi and Dr Qazi Naveed Ahmed (HODs) Dr Shashank Singh, Dr. Sanghapal D. Sawant, Dr Sheikh Tasduq Abdullah and Dr. Prem Narayan Gupta (Sr.Pr. Scientists).

Dr. Deepika Singh Principal Scientist conducted those proceedings while as Er. Abdul Rahim, Head RMBD&IST division presented vote of thanks.
