World Autism Awareness Day event held at Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education

Semthan /Bijbehara,April 02 (Scoop News)- World Autism Awareness Day was organised today by Humanity Welfare Organization Helpline - an organization advocating for the safeguard of the Rights of persons with Disabilities. . The programme was held at Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education Semthan Bijbehara .
It may be mentioned here that every year on 2nd April International day for autism Spectrum Disorder awareness is observed every year. Autism is a benchmark disability under rights of persons with Disabilities act. 2016.
World Autism programme was organised in order to raise awareness about autism and to educate people about the disability. A huge number of children facing Autism along with their parents participated in the programme.

Zahida Hameed, a rehabilitation therapist working at ZAiba Aapa institute gave a session on capacity building of children facing Autism and role of parents. She said that children with Autism need regular intervention in order to gain independence from various behavioural issues. The parents need to take care of these children with maximum protection and attention. Once parents come to know his child is on the Autism spectrum they should not blame each other for the cause but the actual cause of Autism is unknown and we can only take care during the pregnancy of mothers so that the child is well developed and healthy. Even doctors' sons and daughters face Autism. She said four types of therapies can help to minimise mal adaptability aggression and sadness among children facing ASD. These include Speech therapy to enhance communication. Occupational therapy to develop gross motor activities, sensory integration therapies to enhance the response and music therapy to increase the expression and control.

Adil Rashid chief functionary at Humanity Welfare Organization Helpline said that issues in children get developed when parents come to know that their child is on the Autism Spectrum. They put the child on hands free mode and the child starts roaming around playing in an unclean environment and living life with stray animals and not differentiating good and bad, height and depth, hot and cold. Some parents give proper attention towards these children ignoring the disability and highlighting their capabilities. then only hope is generated that all children despite having disabilities can live a life with dignity and honour with maximum independence. He said parents should consult doctors and professionals to give proper medication if needed and regular therapies to overcome delayed milestones in children. He said around 20 children with Autism are under intervention at Zaiba Aapa institute and have been giving better results because of proper attention by professionals. e appealed parents that give maximum time to their children and coordinate with professionals so that children with Autism could gain independence and live a life with dignity

Various parents shared their stories about their children on ASD and said their children are feeling better at Zaiba Aapa institute. One of the parent's admitted that in Kashmir we have human touch and less commercialization in dealing with children with disabilities. in addition we have favourable climatic conditions that give children a conducive environment to develop into an independent being
