Gross Neglect of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Chair Established In Jammu University:Balvinder

Jammu, September 28 (Scoop News)-S Balvinder Singh, renowned RTI Activist and president Sikh Progressive Front, expressed his deep disappointment regarding the handling of Guru Nanak Dev Chair at Jammu Jammu University. The establishment of this Chair was approved by the Higher Education Department, Government of J&K, Vide order No. -JK (HE) augurated on 27th November by Hon’ble LG Sh Manoj Sinha in presence of Mahant Manjit Singh ji, was meant to be significant step in promoting the legacy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Singh stated that a chair dedicated to Guru Nanak Sahib could have served several crucial purposes, if it had been allowed to function properly: it would promote in-depth research into Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings and philosophy, leading to greater understanding of his contributions to spirituality, social justice and interfaith dialogue. Such an initiative also plays a key role in preserving and promoting Sikh heritage, ensuring Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings are understood and disseminated to future generations. Furthermore, it fosters dialogue and harmony among diverse cultural and religious communities.

However, Singh expressed deep regret over the revelations made through RTI filed in Jammu University . the RTI disclosed shocking details about the administration’s handling of the Guru Nanak Chair, Not a single penny is spent on the research work during the last four years. The RTI disclosed that although Rs. 5 lakhs were sanctioned by the higher Education department , only 2.5 lakhs have been released to date. The Punjabi Department’s expenditure report, received under RTI, shows that out of the Rs.2.5 Lakhs, Rs. 1.5 Lakhs were spent on furniture and miscellaneous expences, with the remaining Rs. 1 Lakh was lapsed.

The RTI further revealed that no permanent Chair professor has been appointed, and no research Scholar has been appointed and assigned to undertake research on the teachings and philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Essentially, no amount are left with the department out of the total released amount of Rs.2.5 Lakhs for making appointments of research scholars to undertake research work over the past four years – an act Singh Emphasized as a glaring disrespect not only to the Sikh Community but to GURU NANAK DEV JI himself, which Singh emphasized is intolerable.

Singh Highlighted the growing resentment among Sikhs against the LG administration, Higher Education Department and Jammu University following these revelations. He also highlighted the unfulfilled promises made by Hon’ble LG Sh. Manoj Sinha to promote the Punjabi language, as no efforts have been made to fill the longstanding vacancies for One Professor, two associate professors and One assistant Professor in the Punjabi Department, which have been unaddressed for the past 12 to 13 years.

Singh called for immediate action to rectify these issues and ensure that the Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Chair fulfills its intended role, demanding accountability and from the authorities involved for such glaring disrespect shown to Chair.
