‘Heathy Heart Beats Longer’

Jammu, October 01 (Scoop News)-The Central Govt Pensioners’ Welfare Association, Jammu (CGPWA) celebrated with enthusiasm the 34th International Day for Older Persons, and World Heart Day, which was on 29th September, together with a Health Talk at a well-attended function at the auditorium of the IIPA organised in collaboration with the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital.
The Consultant of SMVD Narayana, Dr Sushant Kumar gave an impressive Talk on ‘Heathy Heart Beats Longer’.
Dr. Ashok Bhan IPS (Retd) member SMVD Shrine Board and former DGP was the Chief Guest and Shri B R Sharma IAS (Retd), State Election Commissioner & former Chief Secretary was the Guest of Honour. Kuldeep Khoda IPS (Retd) President of CGPWA and former CVC & DGP presided over the function.
In his 40-minute brilliant awareness talk on preventive and curative aspects of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), Dr Sushant listed several Risk Factors which he categorised as modifiable and non-modifiable. Listing out modifiable risk factors which can be reformed, he listed these smoking, sedentary habits, stressful life, high sugar level and salt intake, obesity, cholesterol. He suggested measures to modify these factors to keep the heart healthy and said that smoking must be left. He suggested that everyone should do a brisk walk for 150 to 300 minutes and running for 75 minutes to 150 minutes per week. Stress in life must be managed and suggested stress busters to reduce or prevent stress. While the sugar and cholesterol must be kept under prescribed levels, the intake of salt is reduced as it increases accumulation of water in lungs. Cautioning against obesity, he suggested following Body Mass Index.
Speaking about the non-modified risk factors, Dr Sushant Kumar listed aging, family history and sex. He said that the majority of CVD deaths occurred within the first hour of the heart attack. So, the safest way is to rush to the nearest health facility. Blood thinners like aspirin or ecosprin and Sorbitrate tablet should be immediately taken to prevent blood coagulation and pain before getting medical care. He also suggested proper dental hygiene which too at times creates CVD problems.
Dr Ashok Bhan, with his usual out-of-box idea, came up with his seven mantras to keep Elders’ heart healthy and beating for a longer time. He cautioned against taking up paid jobs after retirement if their financial condition is comfortable and said that it would not only unnecessarily impair their dignity and self-esteem, but also add to their worries for issues like investment, saving Income Tax etc. While advising them against sitting idle, and instead do whatever that makes you happy like listening to music, gardening etc, he was not in favour of taking intense pressure and timelines work. Saying that an overflowing schedule can harm their heart, Dr Bhan advised them not to encroach upon their free time.
Asking Pensioners to avoid anger taking control of them, Dr Bhan’s prescription was to move away from the place or situations that causes anguish and anger. His mantra was, “Start counting from 25 to 1 in reverse order”. Saying that while no one is without problems, he said that asked them to follow the adage, “What can’t be cured must be endured.” Another mantra was against giving unsolicited advice, even at home. If not followed, it would cause disappointment. His mantra was to learn when to “open the mouth and when to exercise restraint.” Concluding his prescription, he said that long rope and long tongue always create problems and it would be appropriate to fold up the long thread and tongue.
Kuldeep Khoda in his Presidential address complimented Dr Sushant Kumar for his Awareness Lecture which has benefitted the Pensioners and other Elders. He asked the Elders to avoid raising their expectations unnecessarily and lead a stressless life for their longer comfortable living. Regretting that the private Health Care sector has become commercialised with their focus on fleecing the patients shedding the concept of serving the ailing humanity which has been its noble mission. In this connection he referred to cases where unnecessary tests and procedures were undertaken for greater financial return by the Doctors in these hospitals and advised pensioners to go in for second and third opinions.
B R Sharma who also spoke on the occasion, congratulated the CGPWA and Narayana Hospital for arranging such a highly informative talk on CVD which has created much needed awareness about the heart diseases, their prevention and immediate action if any such eventuality happened to them.
Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries and the elders, the General Secretary CGPWA, K B Jandial said that CGPWA have clubbed two important Days for celebration together with Health Talk on ‘Heathy Heart Beats Longer’. He said that theme of this year’s Elders’ Day is “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide". Thanks to the better health care facilities and development of technology, the life expectancy has gone up to 75 years, 25 years longer than in 1950. In 2018, a historic milestone was reached when the number of older persons outnumbered children under five for the first time globally. With an increase in age population, demand for better healthcare and social support too has surged. On World Heart Day, he said it came into being in 1999 and was being celebrated on the last Sunday of September. Heart attack, coronary heart diseases and stroke are the common cause of deaths and due to lack of awareness about these disorders and faulty lifestyle, about 1.7 cr people die world over every year.
The Secretary CGPWA, B. B. Magotra presented a formal vote of thanks.
