GDC Kargil organizes 3-day study tour to CISIC, UoL, Alchi Hydroelectric Project | |
Kargil, October 07 (Scoop News)-Government Degree College Kargil conducted a three-day study tour for the students of 5th Semester from October 03 to 05, 2024.
The tour was designed for 5th Semester students of Physics and Chemistry Departments to enhance their scientific knowledge and provide first-hand experience with advanced scientific instruments.
The tour commenced on October 3rd, departing from GDC Kargil to Taru campus of the University of Ladakh. On the following day, students visited CISIC, where they had the opportunity to interact with experts regarding various scientific instruments, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS).
Dr. Ibrahim Yusuf, Ph.D. Geology provided insights into the operation and functionality of the XRD machine. Project Associate Dr. Nilza Odzes, Ph.D. and Lamo Dolma from Applied Geology discussed the workings of the BET and AAS instruments.
Additionally, Dr. Amjad Hussain, Assistant Professor of Zoology, elaborated on genome sequencing, PCR machines, micro-centrifuges, and gel electrophoresis.
Dr. Stanzin Pasang, from department of remote sensing and GIS provided a detailed insight about remote sensing, including the use of temperature and humidity sensors developed indigenously.
Moreover, students collected water samples from nearby streams and water bodies in Shey, Spituk, Saspol, and Alchi for subsequent water quality analysis.
On the final day, the students visited the Alchi (Nimo-Basgo) Hydroelectric Project to learn about the scientific and engineering aspects of the facility.
The students visited both the dam and the power station's control room, where Suresh Kumar (the Dam In-Charge) briefed the dam's capacity, flood control measures, and water drainage systems. The command room in-charge discussed power generation, turbine specifications, and the power distribution system.
The students showed keen enthusiasm and engaged actively with the experts and project managers throughout the visit.
The tour included 23 students, accompanied by Kunzang Dolma, (Head of the Chemistry Department), Dr. Zakir Ali (Assistant Professor Chemistry), Dr. Abid Hussain (Assistant Professor of Physics), and Dr. Tsetan Dolker (Assistant Professor Botany).
