Chenab Times Foundation Backs Demand for Thathri and Bhaderwah Districts | | Jammu, January 24 (Scoop News)- The Chenab Times Foundation (CTF) has extended its support to the demand for creating two new districts, Thathri and Bhaderwah, in the Chenab region of Jammu and Kashmir. This comes after the Thathri Development Front, led by its president K.K. Rao, called for the formation of the districts to ensure population-based equality and equitable development in the Union Territory.
In a statement, CTF President Anzer Ayoob emphasized that the creation of these districts would address the administrative challenges and hardships faced by lakhs of people in the region. "The establishment of Thathri and Bhaderwah as separate districts will significantly reduce the difficulties faced by residents in accessing essential services and administrative facilities. This step is not only a matter of justice but also a critical move towards balanced development in Jammu and Kashmir," Ayoob stated. Rao, in his earlier remarks, highlighted the disparities in district-level administration between the Jammu and Kashmir divisions. He noted that several districts in the Kashmir division have only two or three tehsils, whereas districts like Doda have as many as 17 tehsils. "This imbalance must be rectified to ensure equitable governance across the region," Rao said.
The Thathri Development Front has pointed out that Sub-Division Thathri, which comprises five tehsils—Thathri, Phagsoo, Kahara, Bhella, and Chiralla—along with adjoining tehsils Drabshalla and Mahalla, is well-positioned to be upgraded into a district. Similarly, Bhaderwah, with its distinct cultural and administrative needs, also deserves district status to facilitate better governance and tourism development.
Rao and Ayoob both criticized the past delimitation exercises in the state, which they argue have ignored the legitimate claims of the Chenab region. They expressed dissatisfaction with the fragmentation of Sub-Division Thathri during the recent delimitation process, which they believe undermines the area’s geographical continuity and population representation. The Chenab Times Foundation has urged the government, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, LG, concerned MPs, and other stakeholders, to prioritize the demands for creating Thathri and Bhaderwah districts. Ayoob reiterated that this administrative reform should be undertaken before the upcoming Panchayat and Municipal elections to ensure the voices of the region's people are heard and represented effectively.
The demand for district status has also been tied to improving the tourism potential of the region, which boasts picturesque landscapes and a rich cultural heritage. "A separate tourism authority for Thathri, as Bhaderwah already has one, coupled with district status, will pave the way for the region's economic upliftment," said Ayoob.
As the call for justice and administrative reforms gains momentum, the Chenab Times Foundation and Thathri Development Front continue to rally public support to address long-standing disparities in the governance of the Chenab region.
