| Disease Outbreak Reported in Dogs in Zanska | | Animal Husbandry Department Initiates Preventive Measures | Kargil, February 27 (Scoop News)-February 27, 2026: A sudden outbreak of disease has been reported among dogs in certain villages of Zanskar Sub-Division in Kargil.
The affected dogs are exhibiting clinical symptoms including conjunctivitis, excessive salivation, purulent nasal discharge, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
Following a report submitted by the Livestock Development Officer (LDO), Zanskar (vide No. LDO-Z/Tech/2027-2026/570-71 dated 24-02-2026), the office of the Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Kargil, immediately initiated response measures.
A team led by the Disease Investigation Officer (DIO), Kargil, has been deputed to the affected areas to conduct field investigations, collect samples, and carry out laboratory confirmation of the disease. Treatment of affected dogs is currently underway under the supervision of the LDO, Zanskar. The department has also launched awareness campaigns in the villages to educate the public about precautionary measures.
Officials stated that the situation is being closely monitored and all necessary containment measures are being implemented to control the outbreak.
The general public has been advised to: • Avoid direct contact with sick or stray dogs. • Immediately report any dog showing abnormal behaviour or illness to the nearest Veterinary Centre. • Ensure children do not play with sick or stray animals. • Wash hands thoroughly after handling animals. • Isolate sick animals and prevent them from roaming freely. • In case of a dog bite or scratch, wash the wound immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention at the nearest health facility.
The department has urged residents not to panic, assuring that the situation is under active management and necessary steps are being taken to prevent further spread of the disease. ... |
