Er Rashid Flags Impact of Indo-US Trade Deal on J&K Horticulture
Raises Alarm Over Land Loss in Buran Pattan and Decline in Saffron Production

New Delhi, March 18 (Scoop News)-Continuing his address in Parliament during the discussion on Grants on Agriculture, Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Er Rashid elaborated on the growing crisis in Jammu and Kashmir’s agriculture and horticulture sectors, linking it to policy decisions and ground realities affecting farmers.

MP Er Rashid said, “Because of the Indo-US trade deal, our fruit, our saffron, our walnuts have been devastated and ruined,” expressing serious concern over the impact of international trade arrangements on local produce. He further added that farmers in Kashmir have little control over pricing, stating, “The rates of our fruit are decided by traders in Delhi; Kashmiris have no control over it.”

Raising the issue of saffron, Er Rashid questioned the declining production despite government spending, saying, “You are spending a lot of money on saffron, but its production is decreasing day by day.” He also flagged concerns over agricultural inputs, adding, “The pesticides being supplied are substandard. Kindly investigate this.”

The MP also highlighted the lack of irrigation facilities, stating that the absence of proper infrastructure is forcing farmers to abandon traditional agriculture. “There are no proper irrigation facilities, because of which agricultural land is shrinking,” he said.

Expressing grave concern over land-related developments, Er Rashid specifically referred to Buran Pattan, stating that “hundreds of acres of land belonging to farmers, held for decades, have been taken away, resulting in loss of livelihood for thousands.” He termed the situation deeply alarming and urged immediate intervention. Reiterating his demand for safeguarding land rights, he said, “Please provide protection to the land of Jammu and Kashmir as it existed earlier. Do not allow indiscriminate sale or acquisition of land.”

MP Er Rashid stressed that agriculture and horticulture remain the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy and warned that continued neglect of these sectors could have serious socio-economic consequences for the region.
