Vande Bharat Express flagged off between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, MoS Dr. Jitendra Singh, and CM Omar Abdullah jointly inaugurate the high-speed service from Jammu Tawi Station

Jammu, April 30 (Scoop News)-A historic milestone was achieved today in Jammu and Kashmir’s transport infrastructure as the direct high-speed Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar was formally inaugurated, marking a new era of seamless rail connectivity between the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley.The inaugural ceremony at Jammu Tawi Railway Station was jointly flagged off by Hon’ble Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh, and Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Shri Omar Abdullah, reaffirming the Government of India’s vision of “Development through Connectivity.”

The event was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Shri Ghulam Ali Khatana, Shri Satpal Sharma, MLA Dr. Narendra Singh, Shri Vikram Randhawa, and Shri Yudhvir Sethi, along with senior railway officials including Northern Railway General Manager Shri Rajesh Kumar Pandey and Divisional Railway Manager Shri Vivek Kumar. The ceremony was further enlivened by cultural performances presented by schoolgirls, adding a festive touch to the historic occasion.Addressing the gathering, Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw described the launch as “creating new history,” emphasizing that the direct rail link will establish a strong and uninterrupted connection between Jammu and Kashmir Valley, significantly transforming regional mobility and integration.

He highlighted that, in response to growing passenger demand, a modern 20-coach Vande Bharat Express has been introduced on this route instead of the standard configuration. The train incorporates advanced winterization technology, including heated windshields and specialized temperature control systems, ensuring uninterrupted operations even in sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall conditionsCovering a distance of approximately 267 kilometers in just 4 to 5 hours, the service is expected to drastically reduce travel time while boosting tourism, trade, and overall economic activity in the region.Following the inauguration, the Railway Minister undertook an inspection visit to the globally renowned Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and also reviewed facilities and progress at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station.

The regular operations of the Vande Bharat Express will commence from May 2, 2026. The service will run with two pairs of trains, operating six days a week.Train No. 26401/26402 will operate except on Tuesdays. The train will depart from Jammu at 06:20 AM and arrive in Srinagar at 11:10 AM. On its return journey, it will depart from Srinagar at 02:00 PM and reach Jammu at 06:50 PM.Train No. 26403/26404 will operate except on Wednesdays. It will depart from Srinagar at 08:00 AM and arrive in Jammu at 12:40 PM. On the return leg, the train will depart from Jammu at 01:20 PM.The direct high-speed service is expected to significantly benefit tourists, traders, students, and patients by providing a faster, safer, and more reliable mode of transportation, while also strengthening socio-economic connectivity between the two regions.
