“Social Change in Modern India” Gets First-Ever Kashmiri Translation

Jammu, May 05 (Scoop News)-In a significant academic and cultural development, the seminal sociological work Social Change in Modern India by noted Indian sociologist, M.N Srinivas has been translated into Kashmiri for the first time by eminent journalist and author, Dr Rajesh Bhat.
The translation has been undertaken as part of the National Translation Mission project of the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru, aimed at making knowledge texts accessible in Indian languages.
Considered a foundational text in understanding Indian society, the book introduces key concepts such as social mobility, cultural change and the interaction between tradition and modernity. Its translation into Kashmiri is expected to greatly benefit students, scholars and civil services aspirants by enabling engagement with core sociological ideas in their mother tongue.
Importantly, the work assumes renewed relevance in the context of contemporary Kashmir, which is undergoing rapid socio-cultural transformation. The themes explored by Srinivas—shifting social structures, emerging aspirations and the role of State and Institutions—resonate strongly with the region’s evolving realities.
By bringing this landmark work into Kashmiri, Dr. Rajesh Bhat has not only expanded the reach of a classic text but also contributed to strengthening Kashmiri as a language of serious academic discourse.
The initiative is being seen as a major step towards democratizing knowledge and fostering intellectual engagement in regional languages.
Dr Rajesh Bhat, who has over 35 years of experience in journalism, is known for his deep engagement with Kashmir’s socio-political landscape. His earlier, extensively researched work, Radio Kashmir in Times of Peace and War, has been widely appreciated for documenting the region’s media history.
With this translation, Dr Bhat has not only expanded access to a classic text but also reinforced the role of Kashmiri as a language capable of carrying serious academic and intellectual discourse.
