| Jammu Parcel Office books Bengaluru consignment under new transshipment policy | |
Jammu, May 21 (Scoop News)- In a major milestone towards making freight and logistics services modern, transparent, and efficient, Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has achieved a significant breakthrough. Under the new 'Parcel Transshipment Policy' issued by the Railway Board, approximately 240 kg of iron material was successfully booked and dispatched for Bengaluru City from the Jammu Parcel Office. The official implementation of this unprecedented policy has generated huge enthusiasm among local traders and e-commerce companies regarding ease of doing business.Earlier, transshipment of parcels — unloading from one train and loading onto another at any intermediate station — was not permitted. This caused considerable delays when no direct train was available to the destination. Under the Railway Board’s new policy, transshipment is now allowed. Parcels can now be seamlessly transferred at notified junction stations from the main train to other connecting trains or leased Parcel Vans (VPs/SLRs), ensuring uninterrupted movement to the final destination.Instead of paying separate freight for two different routes, traders will now be issued a single 'Parcel Way-Bill' based on the actual distance from the originating station to the final station. This will reduce overall logistics costs.Providing details on the matter, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Shri Uchit Singhal, stated that this policy is proving to be a game-changer for small traders and farmers of Jammu & Kashmir. He said, "Earlier, due to lack of direct connectivity, fruits, vegetables, and other perishable goods could not reach markets on time. Now, with the availability of transshipment, rail transport has become a much cheaper, safer, and faster mode compared to road transport."The 10 parcels dispatched today are part of this streamlined process.
