KVK Kargil Conducts 12th Consecutive Day of “Khat Bachao Abhiyan”

Kargil, June 12 (Scoop News)- Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil, under the aegis of the University of Ladakh, successfully completed the 12th consecutive day of the “Khat Bachao Abhiyan” today, marking the completion of the campaign’s second week since its launch on June 1, 2026.

The objective of the Abhiyan is to promote soil health management, balanced fertilizer use, natural farming, and sustainable agricultural practices among farmers.

The campaign aligns with a nationwide initiative aimed at conserving soil fertility and encouraging environmentally friendly farming practices. It has reached multiple villages across Kargil district, including Darchiks and Garkon in the Aryan Valley, reinforcing farmer awareness and on-field adoption of low-cost, eco-friendly pest management, soil health practices, and natural farming techniques.

Over the 12-day campaign (June 1–12, 2026), the KVK team visited several villages and interacted with hundreds of farmers across remote hamlets of the district.

During the programme, scientists from KVK highlighted the importance of soil testing, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), organic manures, bio-fertilizers, Agniastra, and natural farming techniques for maintaining long-term soil productivity and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Farmers were sensitized about the adverse effects of excessive chemical input use and the need to adopt eco-friendly and climate-resilient agricultural practices.

Participants were provided practical demonstrations on compost preparation, vermicomposting, Jeevamrit, and efficient nutrient use for enhancing soil organic matter and improving crop yields sustainably. Special emphasis was laid on promoting low-cost farming technologies suitable for the region.

Interactive sessions were also conducted wherein farmers shared their experiences and discussed challenges related to soil fertility, crop production, and pest infestation. Scientists responded to farmers’ queries and encouraged them to adopt scientific and sustainable practices to improve farm income while safeguarding the environment.

The programme witnessed active participation from farmers and farm women. KVK Kargil reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening sustainable agriculture and enhancing farmers’ awareness through continuous extension activities under the “Khat Bachao Abhiyan.”

Dr. Nasreen Fatima Kacho, Head, KVK Kargil, said, “Khat Bachao Abhiyan is about empowering farmers with knowledge and low-input solutions that reduce crop losses and improve livelihoods. Reaching remote areas is central to our mandate. Continuous field presence builds trust and ensures timely interventions where they matter most.”
