| Babarr amongst Nita Ambani’s top Contemporary Indian Craft-Based Artist | | Mumbai, June 23 (Scoop News)- Babarr Afzall, one of the most influential voices shaping the future of Pashmina globally, has been recognized by Nita Ambani’s Swadesh, amongst the top contemporary Indian craft-based artist.
A former Silicon Valley technologist, ethical hacker, and consultant with McKinsey & Company, Afzall made an extraordinary life transition over a decade ago, leaving the world of technology and global consulting to work alongside shepherds, artisans, and nomadic communities across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. Today, his artistic practice sits at the intersection of contemporary art, climate action, cultural preservation, and ethical luxury. Working with rare Himalayan Pashmina fibre, natural pigments, and traditional hand processes, Afzall creates deeply layered artworks that function simultaneously as fine art, cultural archives, and environmental narratives. His work draws attention to the fragile Pashmina ecosystem and the communities whose livelihoods depend upon it. The turning point in his journey came after witnessing devastating climate events that resulted in the loss of thousands of Pashmina goats, exposing the vulnerability of one of the world’s most extraordinary natural ecosystems. Since then, his work has become a powerful artistic response to climate change, biodiversity loss, disappearing knowledge systems, and the future of responsible luxury. His works, titled Indelible, Golden Eye, Blood, Togetherness and Growth are under a special exhibit in Mumbai for collectors. Babarr’s work is being exhibited alongside India’s top Pichwai Artist, Shammi Bannu Sharma who is a seventh-generation miniature painting artist from Jaipur, Rajasthan and Faizan Uddin who’s family"s lineage traces back to the principal architect of the Taj Mahal.
Babarr Afzall’s distinctive artistic practice has attracted growing attention from collectors, curators, and cultural institutions across India and internationally. Combining a rare personal journey, from Silicon Valley technologist to Himalayan shepherd, with over a decade of immersive work within the Pashmina ecosystem, Afzall creates highly original, non-reproducible works that resonate with contemporary conversations around climate change, sustainability, heritage, and ethical luxury. As collectors increasingly seek artists with authentic narratives, strong provenance, and cultural significance, Afzall’s work represents a compelling opportunity to acquire pieces that are both aesthetically powerful and historically relevant. Afzall’s unique art has helped bring international attention to the people, landscapes, and traditions behind the world’s finest natural fibre. “Every thread carries a story of resilience, memory, and survival.” Says Babarr. His recognition by Swadesh marks an important moment in the growing appreciation of contemporary practices that bridge heritage, sustainability, material innovation, and the preservation of living traditions for future generations.
