| Panel Discussion on Urban Drainage Infrastructure held in Srinagar | |
Srinagar, August 01 (Scoop News)-The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu & Kashmir State Centre (IEI-JKSC), organized a Panel Discussion on the theme “Urban Drainage Infrastructure in Srinagar: Planning for Sustainable Development.” The programme brought together engineers, planners, academicians, professionals, and other stakeholders to deliberate upon the pressing challenges confronting Srinagar’s urban drainage infrastructure and to explore sustainable, resilient, and integrated approaches for effective urban water management in the face of rapid urbanization and climate change.
The programme commenced with a formal introduction by Er. Irfan Ahmad Reshi, MIE, Honorary Secretary, IEI-JKSC, who highlighted the significance of the panel discussion and emphasized the need for addressing the growing concerns of urban flooding, waterlogging, and drainage management through coordinated technical interventions. This was followed by the welcome address by Er. Ferdous Ahad Bhat, FIE, Chairman, IEI-JKSC, who underlined the importance of sustainable urban planning, resilient infrastructure, and scientific decision-making in ensuring efficient drainage systems capable of meeting the challenges posed by changing climatic conditions and expanding urban settlements.

Iftikhar Ahmad Hakim, Former Chief Town Planner, Er. Shakeel Ur Rehman, Superintending Engineer (Hydraulic), Er. Sajad Kawoosa, Former Superintending Engineer (Drainage), Er. Ahsan Ul Haq, Former Superintending Engineer (Drainage), Er. Anbreena Anjum, Superintending Engineer (Civil), Er. Iftikhar Ahmad Drabu, FIE, Senior Expert, Er. Sajad Ahmad Wani, Former Executive Engineer (Civil), participated in the Panel Discussions besides several others.
The panel discussion focused on a wide range of critical issues including the current status of urban drainage infrastructure in Srinagar, integrated urban planning and drainage management, waterlogging mitigation and climate resilience, sustainable drainage systems and nature-based solutions, smart technologies for drainage monitoring and asset management, operation and maintenance of drainage infrastructure, institutional coordination among various agencies, and policy recommendations for developing a comprehensive roadmap towards sustainable urban drainage management. The deliberations emphasized the importance of technological innovation, scientific planning, inter-agency collaboration, and long-term policy interventions for creating a resilient and efficient drainage network for the city.
The programme concluded with closing remarks by Er. Ferdous Ahad Bhat, FIE, Chairman, IEI-JKSC, who appreciated the valuable contributions made during the discussion and reiterated the Institution's commitment towards promoting technical dialogue on issues of public importance. The Panellists highlighted the importance of coordinated planning, sustainable infrastructure development, and collaborative efforts among government agencies, professionals, and
academic institutions for addressing the emerging challenges of urban drainage and climate resilience.
The panel discussion served as an important platform for exchanging ideas, sharing professional expertise, and generating constructive recommendations aimed at strengthening Srinagar's urban drainage infrastructure through sustainable planning, technological innovation, and integrated institutional efforts, thereby contributing towards a safer, more resilient, and environmentally sustainable urban future. The gist of the deliberations, along with the policy recommendations emerging from the panel discussion, shall be compiled into a policy document and forwarded to the Government and the concerned departments as technical feedback for consideration in future planning and policy formulation.
