| PDF Observes 'Black Day' at Khansahib, Demands Restoration of Article 370, 35A and Statehood | |
Srinagar, August 05 (Scoop News)-The Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Front (PDF) on Tuesday observed "Black Day" by holding a peaceful protest near the Sub Office at Khansahib in central Kashmir's Budgam district. According to the party, the protest was held at the Sub Office after police did not allow the programme to be conducted at the Sub-Divisional Office. Hundreds of party workers and supporters participated in the demonstration.
Addressing the gathering, party leaders described August 5 as a "Black Day" in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and alleged that the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A on August 5, 2019, was carried out unconstitutionally. They maintained that the special constitutional provisions had been granted to the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir through Parliament and should be restored.
The party said the protest was aimed at creating public awareness about what it described as the differences between the pre-2019 and post-2019 constitutional and political situation in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the speakers, the changes had affected the region's constitutional position, land rights, employment opportunities and political representation.
The leaders said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have assured the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir on the floor of Parliament. They questioned what they described as the ambiguity surrounding the demand for statehood, asking whether political parties, particularly the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), were seeking the restoration of statehood alone or statehood along with the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A.
The speakers asserted that the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A was essential for safeguarding the rights of the people, protecting land and employment opportunities, and preserving the unique identity of Jammu and Kashmir. They alleged that the present Union Territory arrangement had reduced Jammu and Kashmir to "a mere municipality" and claimed that governance and democratic institutions had weakened in the absence of full statehood.
Urging the Government of India to address the issue, the party leaders said the Centre should honour its commitment to restore statehood and engage with the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. They appealed to the Government to respect the democratic sentiments of the people and work towards resolving the issue through constitutional and democratic means.
The protest concluded peacefully, with participants reaffirming their commitment to pursuing their demands through democratic and non-violent means. The party also called upon its workers and the people to remain united and continue raising their voice peacefully for the restoration of what it described as the constitutional and democratic rights of Jammu and Kashmir.
