Kargil, October 26 (Scoop News)-The Botany Department of Government Degree College (GDC), Sankoo Campus, organized a lab visit to Department of Botany, University of Ladakh (UoL).
This visit was aimed to enhance students' awareness of research and development (R&D) in the field and cultivate a scientific temper among those pursuing undergraduate degrees. R&D offers vast career opportunities and serves as a platform for exploring novel innovations.
The visiting students were guided by Dr. Shashi Kant Singh, Dr. Villayat Ali, and M.Sc. students about essential laboratory equipment—including the laminar airflow, autoclave, centrifuge, and incubator—and instructed on their principles, operation, and importance in plant biotechnology. They also received a briefing on in-vitro propagation techniques developed by the department.
In the following session, Dr. Mohd Shabir, a plant taxonomist, guided students on preparing herbarium specimens and identifying Ladakh's flora. He emphasized the lab’s collection of medicinal plants and preserved plant biodiversity, featuring species like Marchantia, Equisetum, Chara, Selaginella, and Funaria.
The visit was coordinated by Dr. Saleem Ahmad, Nodal Officer and Dr. Javid Naqi, Head of Zoology, GDC Sankoo Campus. Dr. Shahar Banoo and Dr. Mohammad from the Botany Department at GDC Sankoo Campus, accompanied the students.
