Srinagar, July 22 (Scoop News)-Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Front (PDF) President and former Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Wednesday expressed profound grief over the devastating flash floods that struck the Beerwah and Khag areas of Budgam district following torrential rains, causing widespread destruction to homes, shops, commercial establishments and public infrastructure while claiming a precious human life.
In a statement issued here, Yaseen said the tragic loss of life and the extensive damage caused by the floods have left the entire Valley in shock. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.
He also expressed solidarity with all families whose homes, businesses and livelihoods have been severely affected by the natural calamity.
"The loss suffered by the people of Beerwah and Khag is immense. Families have lost their loved ones, traders have seen years of hard work washed away within minutes, and many residents have been left struggling to rebuild their lives. My thoughts and prayers are with every affected family during this difficult time," Yaseen said.
The PDF President urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to immediately announce adequate ex gratia relief for the family of the deceased and provide generous compensation to those who have suffered losses to their houses, shops, orchards, agricultural land and other sources of livelihood. He said the administration should conduct a transparent and time-bound assessment of the damage so that relief reaches every deserving victim without delay.
Yaseen appreciated the prompt response of the SDRF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Civil Defence volunteers, district administration and other rescue agencies who worked tirelessly to evacuate stranded residents and assist people in distress. He said their dedicated efforts helped save many lives despite extremely challenging conditions.
He also expressed concern over the massive financial losses suffered by traders after floodwaters inundated markets and damaged commercial establishments. He urged the government to announce a special financial package for shopkeepers, small business owners and farmers whose livelihoods have been severely affected.
Calling for long-term measures, Yaseen said the recurring incidents of flash floods underline the urgent need to strengthen flood management systems, improve drainage infrastructure, restore vulnerable embankments and ensure regular desilting of rivers and streams. He urged the authorities to prepare a comprehensive disaster mitigation plan to minimise the impact of such calamities in the future.
Reaffirming his solidarity with the affected people, Yaseen assured them that the People's Democratic Front stands with them in this hour of crisis and will continue to raise their issues until adequate relief, rehabilitation and compensation are provided to every affected family.
