Rahul, Priyanka playing churlish drama on prices: Chugh

Chandigarh,February 21 (Scoop News)-BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh today blasted AICC leader, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, for making hue and cry over increasing petrol and diesel prices saying that the two leaders have forgotten that during the UPA government times the prices skyrocketed manifold more than now.
In a statement, Chugh said while Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharamana is already working on a mechanism to check the spiralling prices it must be told to the Gandhi family members that the petrol prices in Delhi increased by 112% during 10 years of UPA rule but increased only 13% in the four years of NDA rule.
Diesel, too, saw a steep hike during the UPA years with an increase of 160% compared to 28% under the NDA.
Chugh said it was during the UPA II years that the real damage was done to fuel prices. On May 16, 2009, petrol prices in Delhi were at Rs 40.62 per litre. On May 16, 2014, when the UPA ceded office to the NDA, the price of petrol in Delhi was Rs 71.41 per litre. This was a hike of 75.8% over 5 years and 112% over 10 years. Diesel, too, saw a big jump with prices rising from Rs 30.86 per litre to Rs 56.71 per litre. This was a hike of 83.7% over 5 years and 160% over 10 years.
Similarly in the Congress-run Punjab, an extraordinary mess has been created. On 15th June 2020, the Punjab government announced an increase in VAT on both petrol and diesel.
The Punjab government increased VAT on petrol from 233 per cent to 26.43 per cent and on diesel from 15.15 per cent to 15.98 per cent. Through this move, the Punjab government is looking at releasing an additional Rs 250 crore to Rs 300 crore per annum
as revenue. Last year in February, the Punjab government increased the petrol price by Rs.5 and diesel price by Re one in one go.
Chugh said Gandhi should first look into the working of its own governments before saying any word against the NDA government.
Chugh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been working diligently to control the prices and credit must be given to him for his efforts. "The prime minister knows the pain of increasing prices and the nation trusts him for providing relief", Chugh added.
