The meeting was aimed to review and strategize the promotion of winter sports activities in the region, specifically through the Zanskar and Drass Winter Sports Academy, along with the proposed installation of a chair lift.

The meeting was attended by Joint Director, Youth Services and Sports, UT Ladakh, Tahir Hussain Zubdavi; Councillor Bhimbat, Abdul Wahid; Councillor Cha, Stanzin Lakpa; Executive Engineer R&B, Sadiq Ali and DYSSO Leh/Kargil. Representatives from local stakeholders of winter sports promoters were also present, marking the first-ever such gathering with the involvement of local stakeholders.

During the meeting, participants discussed the need for a Sports Academy in Ladakh to facilitate training and further the development of winter sports in the region.

Several key suggestions were proposed, including the formation of a committee comprising local sports promoters, ex-Army servicemen with national and international winter sports experience, and other relevant stakeholders from Leh and Kargil.

EC Tashi emphasized the importance of swift action on these initiatives. He directed the Joint Director, of Youth Services and Sports, to establish the committee to assess local winter sports sites through a physical visit, conduct a slope reiki, and submit a detailed feasibility report. This process will enable informed decision-making for developing winter sports infrastructure in the region.

The stakeholders expressed their urgency regarding the execution of these plans, as they have been delayed for the past three to four years.

They urged that the proposed initiatives be put into action without further delay to harness the region’s potential for winter sports tourism and talent development.
