Farmers’ Delegation Meets Senior Congress Leader Ashok Bhagat Over Severe Drought in Kandi Belt

Akhnoor, April 12 (Scoop News)-A deputation of distressed farmers hailing from various Panchayat Halqas of Tehsil Akhnoor met with Prof. Ashok Bhagat, Senior Congress Leader, at his office located at Manda, Akhnoor on April 9, 2025. The farmers apprised him of the alarming ground situation caused by the severe drought conditions prevailing in the Kandi belt of the region.

During the meeting, the delegation conveyed that the Rabi crops sown during October and November 2024—primarily wheat, mustard, and pulses—have completely failed due to the acute shortfall of rainfall. The lack of moisture and timely precipitation has resulted in widespread crop damage, threatening both food security and livestock sustenance in the rural belt.

The Kandi region, which is entirely dependent on rain-fed agriculture, is facing a dire crisis as thousands of farmers have been left without any yield. With no fodder for their animals and no food grain for their families, the situation is becoming increasingly desperate.

Prof. Ashok Bhagat gave a patient hearing to the deputation and expressed deep concern over the hardships being faced by the farming community. He assured the farmers that their grievances will be strongly raised at appropriate forums. He also appealed to the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to immediately direct concerned Revenue authorities for assessment of the Rabi crop loss in the affected areas of the Kandi belt.

He further urged the administration to announce suitable relief measures for the affected farmers, including compensation, supply of fodder, and food grains to help them sustain through this difficult period.

Prof. Bhagat reiterated that the interests of the farming community must be protected and called for urgent and concrete action from the government to mitigate the impact of the ongoing drought.
