| DUJ Denounces Attack on Office of Daily Ananda Bazar Patrika | | New Delhi, September 02 (Scoop News)-The Delhi Union of Journalists(DUJ) condemns the attack on the office of the Ananda Bazar Patrika in Kolkata by a Hindutva group whose members gathered outside the office and painted the pillars of its gates saffron on September 1, 2026.
The Kolkata Police reportedly watched the vandalism without any attempt to stop it. After an hour they escorted the protestors away from the building. It is not clear which saffron group organised the protest.
The protest comes on the heels of an FIR lodged by the Bowbazar police against the paper's Editor Ishani Dutta Roy, Chief Reporter Soma Mukherjee and other staffers for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Days earlier the BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, had demanded that the daily apologise for its headline which had described the Jadavpur clashes as an example of 'gerua gundami'. The newspaper however did not issue any apology.
The DUJ views the protest, the FIR and the demand for an apology as attacks on the freedom of the press. We condemn all these attempts to intimidate and browbeat the media and demand that the FIR be withdrawn immediately. ... |
