Invasive ‘foreign’ weed spotted in Srinagar: SKUAST-K advises early caution

Srinagar, September 15 (Scoop News)-Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) is advising farmers and agricultural stakeholders to remain vigilant against the re-emergence of the highly invasive ‘foreign’ weed Parthenium hysterophorus L., which was recently spotted by university scientists in an agricultural field in Srinagar.

The advisory calls on farmers and agricultural stakeholders across the Valley to prioritise early detection and caution of the species to prevent it from establishing a firm foothold in Kashmir’s agro-ecosystems.

Belonging to the Asteraceae family, Parthenium hysterophorus is an annual plant recognized globally as one of the most aggressive invasive weeds. Its notoriety stems from rapid growth rates, prolific seed production, fierce competitiveness, and potent allelopathic effects, releasing biochemical compounds that suppress and inhibit the growth of surrounding crops and native flora. Beyond stunting agricultural productivity, it poses severe risks to local biodiversity and broader ecosystem health.

Scientists from SKUAST-K Prof. Purshotam Singh (Agronomist), Prof. Amal Sexana (Agronomist), and Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth (Director Extension, SKUAST-K & Agronomist) noted that the Srinagar detection serves as an early-warning signal rather than a reason for panic, underscoring the necessity for sustained field-level surveillance, particularly across agricultural landscapes and disturbed habitats.

The sighting carries added significance in light of recent research confirming that P. hysterophorus can successfully complete its entire life cycle within Kashmir’s temperate climate. Studies show the weed’s seeds can overwinter in the soil, germinate between late March and early May, and mature into flowering plants that set viable seeds well before the onset of severe autumn frosts.

University experts warned that ongoing seasonal warming could create even more hospitable conditions for the weed's proliferation. The species spreads easily through contaminated soil, agricultural machinery, moving water, vehicular transit, and tainted seed or feed supplies.

While historical records confirm prior documentation of Parthenium in Jammu & Kashmir, the recent findings provide fresh, concrete evidence of its adaptation and reproductive success under local temperate conditions.

To counter the threat, SKUAST-K scientists advocated for a comprehensive, integrated weed-management strategy. They emphasised that coordinated surveillance, rapid identification, mechanical and targeted eradication, and sustained long-term monitoring will be essential to shield Kashmir’s farmlands from wide-scale invasion.
