DUJ calls for more and more united actions

Jammu, May 05 (Scoop News) – The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), in its May Day Charter, has called upon its members to be ready for more and more united actions with fraternal bodies. Calling for steps to strengthen a United Confederation of Newspaper
and News Agency Employees organizations and to widen this unity to the electronic media to save journalism for tomorrow, the DUJ reiterated the
necessity of checks on censorship of news pertaining to labour struggles.

In a statement the DUJ General Secretary S.K. Pande has called for intensification of the agitation to get the wage board implemented, to save the Working Journalists Act and to simultaneously fight the menace of bonds of contract. Expressing concern at increasing cross media ownership, Murdochisation and trivia, and a plethora of unfair labour practices, the DUJ further called for a functional Media Council with teeth to replace the present Press Council and to ensure that it contained representatives from all aspects of the media from print to electronic.

Stressing the necessity to look into changing structures of the newspaper industry since globalization, the DUJ has called for immediate appointment of a Media Commission of experts on the lines of the first and second press commissions, but now encompassing the entire media and a well formulated Newspaper Development Corporation to save agencies like the United News of India and to encourage literary, scientific and historical
magazines wedded to a scientific temper.

A resolution for Press Freedom day May 3 was also passed concerning increasing attacks on press freedom and veiled forms of censorship and attacks on freedom of expression from a variety of sources. The broad contours of the International Federation of Journalists report on the India Chapter was also welcomed.
