| DUJ pay homage to Comrade Dipankar Mukherjee | | 
New Delhi,July 19 (Scoop News) -Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) organized a special meeting of executive committee to pay homage to Comrade Dipankar Mukherjee, a veteran trade union leader and secretary of the CITU who passed away recently.
The speakers in meeting said that Dipankar Mukherjee was a brilliant parliamentarian with versatile capabilities. He guided the DUJ with useful ideas from time to time – besides participating in some professional seminars. He remained a friend of the DUJ always with constructive suggestions and even criticism, the DUJ noted.
The resolution adopted at the meeting noted that “An electrical engineer, Mukherjee started his career in BHEL in Bhopal. He went on to serve in high positions in the Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation and the Haldia Fertilisers before joining the CITU as a full time worker. He was its national secretary until his demise. He also represented CITU in the Central Board of Trustees of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation.”
The resolution further said: “Having extensive knowledge in industrial engineering and industrial economics across industries, particularly in power, fertilizers, and petroleum, he made useful contributions for the revival of industries and PSUs. He campaigned against the anti-PSU policies of successive governments.”
It concluded by saying that “In Parliament, he displayed his versatile qualities and made a mark as an able parliamentarian. As a trade union leader he was known for his deep knowledge of working class issues and his consistent class outlook.”
The meeting also condoled the death of Comrade Kitty Menon, a former member of the DUJ. Paying tributes in her memory the resolution noted that “Kitty had joined the Indian freedom struggle in England as a student activist. After her return to India she participated in various movements before finally joining the Delhi University as a teacher. She actively participated in the teachers’ movement. After her retirement, she worked in the People’s Democracy for over two decades.”
The DUJ will be part of the memorial meeting to celebrate he life, being held on July 22, 2012, on her birth anniversary at the Speakers Hall, Constitution Club at 5.00 p.m. Among the other organizers are the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust, Democratic Teachers Federation and the Social Scientist. All members are requested to attend the programme.
The meeting also strongly condemned the attack on Tongam Rina, associate editor of the Arunachal Times, in Itanagar on the evening of July15, 2012. Rina was entering her office when she was shot at by an unidentified gunman who remains at large. The senior journalist is also the President of the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists.
The DUJ notes with concern the increasing attacks on the media and attempts to throttle the freedom of the press. It urges upon the State and Central Governments to ensure the safety of journalists and act swiftly to act to bring those guilty of acts of violence, assault and intimidation to justice urgently.
The meeting heard a report on the preparations for the August 3 strike called by the All India Newspaper Employees Federation for the implemenation of the Wage Board report for journalists and press workers.
The meeting was also informed about the implementation of the wage board in all seven editions of the Deshabhimiani daily in Kerala and the Rashtriya Deepkia another Malayalam daily.
For the first time an invitation has been extended to the DUJ from the International Federation of Jouranists. The IFJ has invited the DUJ General Secretary to a Meeting of South Asia Media Solidarity Network, to be held at Khatmandu, Nepal.
The programme is being organised by the South Asia Media Solidarity Network (SAMSN). This year’s meeting will mark ten years of SAMSN and will be an important occasion for stocktaking.
The statement said that the court hearing the revision petition filed by journalist Syed Mohammed Ahmed Kazmi challenging the extension of his judicial custody period from 90 to 180 days reserved its orders. Kazmi was arrested on suspicion of his involvement in the terror attack on an Israeli diplomat here on February 13 The DUJ has set up a monitoring and steering committee which will meet next week to discuss the issue threadbare.
The executive gave the call to all members to be ready for a phase- wise planned action programme on the wage board issue starting from August 3 in response to the call of the Confederation of Newspaper and News Agency Employees Organisations. The DUJ has expanded its press unity centre initiative for joint programmes on common issues with press workers in Delhi. It has also cautioned members against adventurers and splitters who surface from time to time, to attack even established organizations like the DUJ, during crucial periods of struggles. Unity and wider Unity is required to fight government and management machinations .
