Delhi Union of Journalists observed Black Day
New Delhi/Jammu, September 13 (Scoop News)- The Delhi Union of Journalists(DUJ) today observed Black Day “ to protest the growing threats to the freedom of the Press.
DUJ members expressed concern over the intolerance displayed by few state governments as was evident from detaining newspersons by slapping various charges on them for acts done during the discharge of their professional duties in various parts of the country from Maharashtra, West Bengal, Kerala to Karnataka.



DUJ members also observing Stop Media Bashing Day and Save Journalism Day on Friday through a signature campaign by wearing of Stop Press Bashing badges from 1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.


This decision was taken at a meeting of the DUJ office bearers on Thursday evening. The meeting further took note of attempts to curb the freedom of the press through the backdoor by bringing in the doctrine of postponement of publications of hearings.


It further resolved to observe Vigilance Week before the month ends to save the wage board and the Working Journalists Act and to extend it to the electronic and broadcast media. The dangers of cross media ownership were also outlined and a call given to fight for an all spectrum Media Commission to look into ominous facets of the media clearly visible after globalization.



Demanding an immediate end to the practice of employing journalists on contract as it endangered the freedom of the Press due to job insecurity of such newspersons, the DUJ also demanded the immediate setting up of a Media Commission to look into the entire media scene and the sea changes it has undergone since the last commission’s report more than three decades ago and suggest suitable legislative and administrative actions needed to clean up the present mess.. A note has already been submitted to the Information Ministry.

The meeting also expressed concern at threats reportedly given to persons and relatives connected with journalist Kazmi case.

The meeting rejected lock stock and barrel the Press Council Chairman’s attempt to convert the present Press Council into Media Council. A Media Council must cover the entire media, the DUJ said.
