PDP condemns violence in Zanskar
Mehbooba urges restraint, offers support in restoration of peace
Srinagar, October 26(Scoop News) - Advising caution and restraint over the situation in Zanskar area of Kargil, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today urged the government to ensure safety and security of people there. In a statement issued here today the party president Mehbooba Mufti expressed anguish at the miseries heaped on a handful of defenseless people and government’s inability to enforce law and order. She strongly condemned the violent incidents in Zanskar that had left many people injured and homes damaged.
Mehbooba said it was a matter of shame that the government failed to reach out to the population of the distant area in time which has created panic and fear among them. Even though the situation had been simmering for nearly a month the government in its trademark arrogance and callousness allowed it to build into a communal crisis that could have ominous portents for the entire sensitive region, she said. She said it was very unfortunate that the chief minister spent a day in the region for partisan political pursuits but had no time to visit Zanskar, take stock of the situation and reassure the harassed population about their security.
Expressing concern at the condition of those who were injured in clashes at Zanskar, Mehbooba said the government must make all arrangements for their treatment and stay at Srinagar as long as it was required. She said the victims should be fully compensated and rehabilitated as the state had failed to provide them security against violence.
Mehbooba said both National Conference and Congress who claim representation of Ladakh owed a moral responsibility to ensure that communal peace in Ladakh region was not disturbed on any pretext. She said the two parties must rise above their vote bank politics and ensure the ugly communal incidents of the past that had left deep scars don’t revisit the area. The PDP she said would extend its helping hand in whatever form it could.
The PDP president urged the government to relax curfew on the occasion of Eid to enable people to offer prayers at the Eidgah.
