Protest demonstrations in Jammu against conversions of Buddhists

Jammu,October 30 (Scoop News) - A joint protest by the members of Civil Society including prominent persons of various socio-religious organizations was held at Press Club Jammu in support of Buddhist Community.

The protestors told that they had assembled here against the forcible conversion of 26 persons of Buddhists community at Padam, Zanskar in Kargil district of Ladakh region. They alleged that the Buddhists have been experiencing persecution from the majority community which may refer to beating, torture, forcible conversions or execution.

The Civil Society of Jammu has also come in support of the Buddhists of Ladakh region against their forcible conversions and have taken strong exception to the statements of Hurriyat Conference and other separatist leaders and asked them not to meddle into affairs of the people of Ladakh region, especially the Buddhists community.

The students from Zanskar also participated in the protest demonstrations against the alleged forcible conversions of the members of 6 families of Buddhists.

The students threatened to launch an agitation to support their relatives and demanded deployment of army at Zanskar town. They also blamed the administration and made serious allegations that the police deployed in those areas is in hand in glove with the majority community who always try to dominate Buddhist community as it hardly takes any action against persons of majority community who are involved in confiscating or destruction of their property, or in the incitement of hatred toward Buddhists.

While speaking on the occasion Stanzin Yongdus of Youth of Zanskar said that the working of the officials posted in those areas is not fair and transparent as it is only because of their connivance and support these kinds of activities are going on in those areas since many years. He told that in Zanskar, although Buddhists are in majority in some areas, yet they have been facing unabated harassment in the hands of other Community, and when anyone brings this into the notice of the administration, no action is ever taken against the people involved.


Ashwani Chrungoo, President of Panun Kashmir said that the Buddhists Associations, especially Buddhists Spiritual Heads should have raised this issue by now in Delhi. He told that it is unfortunate that only few Buddhists associations have come in support of these illegal conversions. Speaking on the occasion he assured that Dogra Samaj of Jammu and Kashmiri Pandit Community, although they themselves are in turmoil for the last several years will render all possible support to the Buddhists of those areas. He said that people who have faith in Indian State are getting harassed by the people sitting in position of power in those areas and cautioned them and also asked the Buddhists to make aware all those people who are on important positions about these developments.

Dr. Ramakant Dubey, President VHP J&K State asked that J&K Govt. and Central Govt. should thoroughly investigate how Buddhists are getting converted. He asked that extremist’s elements and people involved in these kind of activities shall be booked under NSA as exercise done in these kind of matters is not sufficient. He said that Buddhist are true nationalists and are part of Hindus and if they are not safe in Ladakh, Hindus are not safe anywhere in India.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Jagdish Dogra, President Sanatan Dharam Sabha, Surinder Choudhary, Gen. Secretary BJYM, Stanzin Paksang of Youth of Zanskar, Madhav Vaid of Bajrang Dal and Deepak of Hindu Jagaran Manch.

Prominent persons present in the protest demonstrations included Surinder Mohaan Aggarwal, President BABA Yatri Niyas, Dr. Shyam Lal Gupta, Gen. Sec. VHP J&K State, Pawan Kotwal, President Jain Sabha, Dr. V.K. Gupta, President VHP Jammu Mahanagar,. Rakesh Sharma Chalisa Premukh of Bajrang Dal.
