Seminar on "Organic Farming" organized by LEHO at Leh
Leh,November 09 (Scoop News)-CEC LAHDC Rigzin Spalbar today inaugurated a daylong seminar on "Organic Farming" organized by Ladakh Environment & Health Organization (LEHO) at Leh Conference Hall the seminar with the lunching of a verity of packed organic products including Dried Apricot, Apricot nuts, Roasted Barley, walnuts, Black Pepper, Apricot Papad, Tea, Cumin and Apricot Jams which are purely produced by the farmers of Takmachik, Achinathang, Umla, Kanji and Shara villages. The CEC along with EC Agri Sonam Dorjey and EC, Animal Husbandry Gyurment Dorjey also released three brochures of LEHO on Addressing Common Insect Pest Problems for Organic Farming in Ladakh, Important Management Practices in Organic Farming and Pregnant Mother Schemes.

Expressing great happiness over the initiatives of LEHO for providing suitable platforms and direction for the farmers of Leh district in organic farming and calling it just the beginning towards organic farming CEC Rigzin Spalbar appreciated LEHO headed by their president Dr. Mohd Din. He strongly stressed upon the Agriculture and allied departments and NGOs to have in hand an alternative means for the chemical fertilizers before completely stop using them.
“By today’s date, Ladakh has not yet crossed the limit beyond which we cannot turn back to organic farming, we still have the middle path and all the concerned govt. depts. and NGOs and more than that the farming population need to realize the significance of organic farming and look for every possible means to develop it in the region,” asserted Spalbar. He added that LAHDC too realizing the need has made a major shift from infrastructure to agriculture development in the 12th five year plan for a sustainable economic development in the district.

The morning session of the seminar was held under the chairmanship of Executive Councilor for Agriculture Sonam Dorjey. He while appreciating the endeavour of LEHO said that until and unless we have a good market for the produces of our farmers they will not take agriculture seriously and to provide market with good profits LAHDC has already initiated many programmes.



The Executive Councilor for Animal Husbandry Gyurmet Dorjey addressing the seminar said that the aim of the farmers of Ladakh should be to export organic products in other parts of world but at the same time it must be made compulsory for Ladakhi people to consume organic foods.
Other invitees from different fields also delivered their speeches highlighting their perspective and field expertise the benefit of organic farming who were Dr. Mohd Saleem Mir, Associate Director Research SKUAST, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Leh Dr. Mohd Sharif, Sub Distt Agriculture Officer, Leh Thinless Dawa and Dr. Padma Gyurmet of Sowa Rigpa.

Certain farmers from representing villages also shared their incredible and enlightening experience and knowledge on organic farming.
