DUJ observing National Press Day on November 16
Demands Setting of a Media Council ,setting up of a Media Commission

New Delhi/Jammu, November 15 (Scoop News) – The Delhi Union of Journalists will be observing the National Press Day on November 16, 2012 as National Demands Day. It would be focusing on the setting up of a all encompassing Media council to replace the toothless Press Council. Side by side it also demands the setting up of a Media Commission through an Act of parliament, taking into account the multifaceted media that has taken shape, on the lines of the first and second Media Commissions.

This, the DUJ said, was having grave ramifications on the freedom, dignity and security of service. The current policy has reduced journalists to victims of bonds of contract in the wake of the wide changes in the media since the onset of globalization.

Calling for the widest possible unity of journalists’ bodies, the DUJ has demanded Setting of a Media Council ,setting up of a Media Commission,Amend the Working Journalists Act to bring in the entire media under its orbit, end contract labour in the industry, put curbs on cross media ownership, immediate steps to help the growth of national language news and feature agencies ,implement the Wage Board Recommendations and proper Insurance and Pension scheme for journalists & press workers

In a joint statement today the DUJ President Sujata Madhok and General Secretary S K Pande have taken serious note of the increasing attacks on press persons and a virtual de facto censorship of not only struggles in the newspaper industry but of all working class struggles. The DUJ noted with concern that unfair labour practices were increasing manifold with the central and state governments remaining as mute spectators. The DUJ will be submitting a charter on issues concerning Delhi journalists to the Delhi government. Outlines of these have already been submitted to the Labour ministers in 2010 and 2011.

A national charter on the basis of responses received by the DUJ will be submitted to the relevant ministries tomorrow.
