| Seminar on ‘’Environmental Sustainability in J&K ‘’ | | 
Jammu, January 19(Scoop News) –The J &K Minister for Higher Education Mohd.Akbar Lone today hinted that all such private colleges will be closed in the state if they become only institutions of minting money. However, the academic institutions in private sector will be patronised by the government and provided genuine support if they show academic excellence, the minster said in his inaugural address on one - day National Seminar on ‘’Environmental Sustainability in J&K ; Indicators and Trends ‘’,which was organised by Gandhi Memorial College in collaboration with Indian society of Geomatics and Kashmir University at Raipur Bantalab in Jammu .
Praising the college management for organising a seminar on an issue of great importance for the people of the state, the minister called upon on the experts, intellectuals and members of civil society to contribute in sustaining the quality of life for all people and preserving the beauty of environment in Jammu and Kashmir .Asking the experts to jointly identify the areas of concern and regarding environment and their solutions ,the minister urged them to prepare a project in this behalf to be submitted to the Chief Minister for implementation .
Recalling his association with Kashmir Pandits ,Lone said that the community had always produced great teachers and also have been contributing in education throughout the state . Despite the period of turmoil, the pandit community did not digress in the pursuit of education and contributed within and outside the state in the field of education, he said and urged them to forget the agonies of the past and show pro-active stance in reuniting the people for further strengthening the secular ethos .He assured all genuine help to Hindu Education Society Kashmir (HESK).
The Minster also released the book on ‘women Career orientation ‘by Dr.Arti Durani and college news letter titled Glimpses.
In his address, former Chief Secretary and member of the legislative council Vijay Bakaya said that the role of HESK and growth of Gandhi Memorial College at Jammu is an example of the resolve shown by the Kashmir pandit community to uphold its core value to propagating education .He complimented the management for scripting this success story and also laying strong educational foundation.
Referring to the existing environmental situation, Bakaya underlined the need for close cooperation among the stake holders- the government, the experts, the educational institutions and the civil society. He also stressed the need for environmental sustainability, including forest and biodiversity, pollution control and impact on human health .These sustainability programmes need to be accelerated, he added.
The president of HESK Anil Dhar and Principal of GMCEJ Jammu Prof.G.L.Koul also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier ,The head of the department of Earth Sciences of Kashmir University Prof.Shakil Romshoo gave up a power point presentation on ‘’Environmental Scenario in J&K-indicators and Trends ‘.These included areas-snow and glaciers, land system changes ,wetlands and water bodies ,land degradation, stream flow changes and energy development ,climatic changes ,food security ,tourism ,urbanisation and environmental and conclusions and the road ahead.
Various papers were presented and discussed by the participants in the seminar during technical session .While Professor Ganjoo department of Geology of Jammu university presented paper on ‘waster resources and climatic change ‘, the former Vice Chancellor of the Global Open University Prof. Ravi Jyee spoke on ‘contributing factors to Global warming Climate Change and Its Effects on Natural resources World wide ‘. Dr.Nadeem Ahmad of Geological Survey of India also presented paper on ‘how protected is our ground water.
