Formal academics and music should go together – Abhay Sopori | | Jammu, February 12 (Scoop News) –Jammu city and neighboring areas have been resonating with music performances of SaMaPa Aalap Festival 2013 for the last 12 days. As part of the 8th SaMaPa Aalap being presented by Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts in collaboration with J&K Police, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Department of Tourism, Jammu, the Day 12 saw a mesmerizing Santoor recital by Santoor Maestro & Music Composer Abhay Rustum Sopori at G.D. Goenka Public School, Jammu. Abhay presented the morning Raga Ahir Bhairav giving a brief about the instrument Santoor and explaining the subtle nuances of Indian classical music. The entire school sang with him as he presented various phrases and compositions in the Raga. He was accompanied on Tabla by Vishal Singh, an upcoming Tabla player from Jammu. The concert was attended by a large number of students and music connoisseurs. Abhay’s performance demonstrated mellifluous playing, lightning tempo, clarity and accuracy of Raga exposition and adoption of the Sopori Baaj (style) the unique format of Santoor playing created by music legend Pandit Bhajan Sopori. The remarkable and unique quality of his presentation that he sings the composition along with its instrumental rendering is a real treat for the listeners and the audience enjoyed the concert thoroughly. Abhay Rustum Sopori, who is acclaimed for his versatility, has carried forward the great legacy of his family in propagating and promoting the Indian culture globally. He has the credit for creating a Cultural Revolution in the Jammu and Kashmir State bringing the youth together through music. His efforts and initiatives have been path-breaking creating a new generation of music connoisseurs and bringing more recognition to the art and culture of the country. The concert was followed by a long interactive session where the young students came up with various queries on music and culture. Abhay asked the students to maintain a balance between formal academic studies and music. He said both need emphasis but education is must as it provides the sensibility while music provides sensitivity to bring out a beautiful and refined personality. ... |
