High level meeting to save the fast perishing Pashmina Goats in Ladakh
Rs.4121 Lakh financial allocation for Pashmina Wool Development

Leh,April 18 (Scoop News) –High level meeting was called in the wake of high mortality rate of around 25000 livestock in Changthang region in Ladakh due to heavy snowfall in the month of January and February this year causing severe jolt to the livelihood source of the nomads of the region
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of EC Gurmet Dorjey called by the Ministry of Textile, GoI headed by Director MoT Geeta Narayan along with K K Goyal Ex-Director, Anurag Purohit Sr. Textile Engineer, Central Wool Development Board and Kulkarni, Sr. Scientist Wool Research Association, Mumbai. The purpose of the meeting was to have a detail discussion on the component-wise and year wise financial allocation of total Rs.4121 Lakh under Pashmina Wool Development Scheme during the 12th Five year plan for five consecutive years, that is, from 2012 to 2017. DC Leh Tsering Angchuk was also present in the meeting.
The meeting commenced with a power point presentation by Dr. Sharrif, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Leh apprising the delegate from centre on the recent calamity occurred in Changthang with detailed facts, figures and pictures. Dr. Sharrif also made a mention that through this projects they are intending to encourage the natives from Changthang to rear maximum of livestock for a better and stable source of livelihood with special emphasis on the down trodden section of the community.
In the meeting various proposed modified components were discussed at length that includes distribution of high quality Pashmina bucks (non-traditional areas), buck exchange programme (traditional areas), assistance for foundation stock in non-traditional area of Pashmina rearing, health coverage, strengthening of existing fooder banks/fodder farms, strengthening of existing Pashmina breeding farms, establishment of Multi-purpose extension centres for nomads on migratory routes, establishment of pasture farm on migratory routes, establishment of pasture farm on migratory routes, feed supplement, Assistance for setting up Pashmina Goat Pen for protecting flocks, assistance for providing portable tents, torch, gumboots and goggles, distribution of improved pashmina combs for efficient harvesting of pashmina, training programme/breeder orientation/health camps, upgradation of existing pashmina dehairing plant at Leh, overhead expenses and R&D Projects.
After a threadbare discussion, the director expressed great satisfaction over the works being carried under Pashmina Wool Development Scheme and emphasis on complete utilization of the allocated funds within the give time frame with extending possible support from their side. Keeping in mind the limited working season Gurmet Dorjey urged the Director for early release of funds and also to increase the revolving fund.
Th others present in the meeting were Councilor Kyungum Dorjey Motup, Councilor Durbuk Namgyal Dorjey, Conservator Forest Jigmet Takpa, SE PWD, DSHO, Dr. Namgyal, Sect. ACPGA, Dy. Reg. Cooperative Sonam Nurbu, ACD Mosis Kunzang and representatives from NGOs.
