Azad visits Doda, reviews relief & post earthquake scenario
Jammu, May 4 (Scoop News) –To take stock of the damage caused by the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the entire erstwhile District Doda and its adjoining areas on 1st of May 2013, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ghulam Nabi Azad accompanied by Vice Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), M. Shashidhar Reddy, today visited District Doda and took stock of the response of the District Administration and convened a meeting of the District and Sectoral officers at Doda to review the post earthquake scenario.
While speaking on the occasion, Azad underlined the need for adopting latest technology while constructing residential as well as Government establishments to make them earthquake proof to minimize the loss of life and property in such natural calamities. He directed District administration to make detailed survey of the damages caused due to earthquake on war footing basis and ensure that the relief percolate down to the deserving affected families. He said there is need of massive mobilization of tents in the region and the District Administration as well as State Government must have to be on their toes. Earlier Azad visited Gandoh, Bhaderwah and assured affected people that necessary help and relief will be provided to them by the Government so that they can reconstruct / repair their damaged houses and till then tents will be provided to the affected families for temporary shelter.
Reddy, Vice Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) participating in the meeting said that experts of NDMA will visit the affected areas soon to access the damages and apprised that workshops will be conducted by NDMA in the region very soon to educate the people about the measures and precautions to be taken while facing such natural calamities which will certainly help to minimize the loss of life and property.
While presenting a power point presentation DDC Doda, Mubarak Singh apprise the meeting about the damage and destruction caused by the earthquake and said that the survey is going on at Block level, Tehsil level and village level to access the actual damage and teams have been deputed in the entire District. He said there is immediate need of 1000 tents for the affected families whose houses have been affected by the calamity and are not fit for living in, Azad agreed and said that 1000 tents will be provided to affected families in the region. DDC also said that Emergency rescue equipments, Portable lighting towers, fire extinguishers, rescue saw/ cutters and critical care ambulances are also required for the speedy and prompt relief and rescue operation during such eventualities in future.
Azad visited various affected places in Bhaderwah which include Passri Mohalla, GHSS (Girls) Bhaderwah, Tehsil Court Complex Bhaderwah, Tourist Reception Centre Dandi Bhaderwah and other affected places and took onspot assessment of the damages.
MP Ch. Lal Singh, Minister for PWD (R&B) Abdul Majid Wani, MLC Khalid Najib Sohrawardy and Shyam Lal Bhagat also spoke on the occasion and urged upon the government to take necessary steps to provide relief and assistance to the affected people in the area.
