Enmity and hatred everywhere

By Amit Kushari

I think as a nation we are losing all sense of civility. Earlier also we had many general elections but never before did we witness such uncontrolled acrimony among different political parties. It appears that something very unusual is happening. Perhaps we are going to witness a tectonic shift in the political scene in India, perhaps we are going to witness considerable decimation of regional political parties in the Hindi heartland.

Perhaps the stranglehold of the Gandhi family over Indian politics is going to disappear from the scene. Perhaps Modi’s vijay rath (the chariot of victory) has started knocking on the doors of even non Hindi bastions like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. The frenzy that we are witnessing now may be just an indication of the coming of a huge political storm over the Indian horizon. The Congress party is obviously fearful and desperate. Modi becoming the P.M. of India is a huge threat for the Congress party and the Gandhi family. Modi may not be as kind and forgiving as Vajpayee. He may take very strong punitive actions against Congress leaders who had indulged in corruption. Mulayam and Maya may lose their hold over U.P. Even Jayalalitha and Mamata Bannerji have started feeling the heat and they have also started slamming the BJP. Earlier, BJP had only 10% support in these states. Now surveys indicate that BJP may get 12% votes in Tamil Nadu and 19% votes in West Bengal. If Modi’s chariot goes at this speed, Trinamool Congress, AIADMK and DMK would be affected and hence the hue and cry.

Samajwadi party is trying to bring all Muslim voters under their umbrella. Congress and BSP are also trying the same so that Modi’s chariot could be halted. Surveys are showing that a large chunk of schedule caste voters are drifting from BSP and Congress towards Modi/BJP, such is the magnetic attraction of Modi’s personality. That is extremely bad news for BSP and Congress. Mayawati perhaps now realises that most probably in 2014 her dream of becoming the P.M. as “dalit ki beti”, may not be fulfilled but another “dalit ka beta” (Modi) could become P.M. instead. Modi belongs to a very backward caste (ati pichhri jati) and he is also a “dukh bhogi” Hindu (a suffering Hindu) like Mayawati herself.

At this juncture, Modi should show utmost restraint and sobriety. Even if others are throwing stones at him he should not retaliate in a similar way. Already surveys have started showing that NDA is likely to get 275-280 seats. So he should show some magnanimity of heart towards others. BJP should not talk of any “badla”. Uma Bharti may be advised not to make intemperate comments about sons and sons-in-law of other families. Shri Modi in a televised interview has said recently that no vindictive action will be taken against anyone, including the Gandhi son-in-law. He said all action will be taken in the normal legal course and there will be no witch hunting. The BJP leaders have hinted that an Accountability Commission could be set up to examine the corruption charges against senior leaders, including those from the BJP. They have also hinted that a number of fast track courts could be set up so that all the corrupt leaders could be brought to justice within one year. It is a must for BJP to do this because NDA may come to power because the people are voting against UPA because of corruption charges against them.

The enmity and hatred have spread throughout the country to such an extent that even the actors and directors of Bollywood have been affected. Bollywood has been split into half vertically, half supporting the UPA and half the NDA. Recently an appeal was made by some Bollywood directors to support a party on the plank of secularism as top priority whereas corruption and malgovernance could be given a lower priority. Obviously this group was trying to help the UPA. Today Mr. Modi has pointed out that this frenzied hatred is only due to the electoral heat and once the elections are over this unfortunate atmosphere will return to normalcy.
