| Mufti Sayeed’s “Praise” for Pakistan and Hurriyat ; positive side to it | |

Soon after assuming charge as the Chief Minister of J&K , Mufti Mohammad Sayeed held a press conference to outline the priorities of the new government , based on what is called as ‘ Agenda Of The Alliance .” Among other things said in the press meet , Mufti Sayeed referred to the role of Pakistan and the Hurriyat in the election process , held to constitute the State Assembly . He reportedly gave credit to them for peaceful manner in which the election was held . His words, translated from Urdu would read like that Pakistan and Hurriat ,too , helped in the peacefully conduct of the election . He used Urdu word “ Bhee “ in the statement . Hell broke out thereafter. Mufti is charged of “ blasphemy “ . The political forces who had no qualms in cohabitating with him to enjoy power from 2002 to 2008 , suddenly, became “ super nationalists “ and denounced him as anti- national .
One may accuse Mufti Syaeed of many things but certainly no one can deny him political acumen and sense of timing . He may be a man of few words when it comes to elocution or communicating things , but there is no denying that he uses words deftly , with economy and telling effect , suit to the occasion he seems right and the constituency he has in the view . Mufti said that Pakistan and Hurriyat also played a part in polling being smooth . They could have sabotaged it had they intended to do . Whether Pakistan and Hurriyat provided a helping hand or not is for Mufti Sahib to explain . We don’t hold his brief nor claim authority to speak on his behalf . One , nevertheless , feels exercised at the new found sense of “ outrage “ of these “ neo super nationalists “ who , till other day, would castigate BJP on taking up the same position .
Well , we do not know with what intent Mufti Sayeed used the words . That leaves room for the “ Super nationalists “ to read them in positive a way . The word ‘ also ‘ is always read in ‘ addition ‘ , not in substitution or subrogation. A job , essentially , has to be done or is done by the principals meant to do so . Here, the job of holding peaceful election was primarily of the people of J&K , the E C of India and the security forces . They have done it commendably . Now if any one says that Pakistan and Hurriyat , too , did help in the process , he is making them accessories or acquiescing partners to the job . Holding elections in J &K is for the Election Commission of India and the security forces , in which people are active participants . It is an essential component of the Indian Constitution . In unfolding election process , therefore , Indian Constitution plays out itself in Kashmir . When Pakistan and Hurryiat help such a process in J&K they accept inevitability of the State’s Constitutional relationship with India . Wittingly or unwittingly , their whole Kashmir narrative assumes a pro India flavour .
The “ praise “ for Hurriyat has to be seen in the aforementioned context . Mufti may be telling them ,look you have helped the election process , now it is must reach its logical end . The end product of this process in the government formation . Given the fractured nature of mandate , the alliance he has cobbled together with the BJP is that logical end . So , CM Mufti, is trying to make his life easy in the Valley , post PDP’s political marriage with the BJP .
Despite threats from across the border and boycott calls of the separatists , the election exercise has been going on in the State since 1996 .With the passage of time and improvement in the security scenario ,thanks to the security forces and local police , the people participation increased and the violence decreased . The ‘ helping role ‘, if any , of the separatists and Pakistan has to be appreciated from the point of their disruptive value , rather than from their positive intent . Remember , one big terrorist incident in the heart of Valley could have reduced the electorates’ participation and denied the government of India an argument which it held out to the world claiming , rightly , the legitimacy of these elections .
For Pakistan and the Separatists to help in the conduct of elections , as CM Mufti Sayeed said , would amount to their active participation in commission of the ‘SIN ‘ . Because , they would accuse any one of “ blasphemy “ who ventured to take part in the exercise . So , the “ hyper nationalists ‘ should be thankful to these actors for being ‘ partners ‘ in the ‘sin ‘.
Some times “ political blasphemy “ becomes a ‘boon ‘ . We should see CM Mufti Sayeed ‘s statement in that light
