Over 80,000 voters to determine fate of 26 contestants among 90 candidates | left in fray for LAHDC elections | Leh (Ladakh), October 4, (Scoop News)-After withdrawal of nomination papers by 47 contestants on the last day, 90 candidates are left in the fray for 26 constituencies in the fifth general elections to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, a senior official said on Sunday. Of total 158 nomination papers submitted by the candidates, 21 election documents were found invalid during scrutiny, he said adding after withdrawal by another 47 contestants on the last day, 90 aspirants are left in the field for the elections now to be held on October 17. The official said there are 24 independent candidates also contesting this time including 16 from the recently launched New Ladakh Movement (NLM). In five constituencies including Lingshet, Chushul, Basgo, Panamik and Martselang there would be straight contest while six candidates were in the fray for Karzok seat, he added. Interestingly, both National Conference (NC) party and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have filed papers for eight in constituencies each in the forthcoming council elections while Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) have fielded their candidates for all 26 seats of the council. Over 80,811 (Leh-67,757 and Nubra -13,054) voters will be exercising their right to franchise on 274 polling booths set up for 26 seats of the LAHDC. The elections are scheduled to be held on October 17, the counting of votes will be counted on October 23 and the entire election process will formally culminate on October 28. Of total 26 seats in the LAHDC, 21 council constituencies are spread in Leh assembly segment and remaining five seats are situated in the Nubra assembly constituency. ... |
