JU celebrates Constitution Day
Jammu, November 26 (Scoop News)-To reaffirm our faith in the ideals and principles laid by the Constitution and to revive its basic philosophy of building a democratic society without fear or bias, the Constitution Day celebrations were held in the University of Jammu here this morning.
The programme was organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu to celebrate the Constitution Day to mark the adoption of the august document 66 years back.
The celebrations were marked by the Lectures delivered by Justice J. P. Singh, Member, State accountability Commission and Prof. S. K. Sharma, former Information Commissioner.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice Singh said that this day holds a special relevance in the annals of the history as on this day, the people of India gave themselves a document that came to be known as the “Constitution of India”- Which gives us many rights and duties and the balance between the two needs to be understood.
He further said that the philosophy and ideals of the Indian Constitution are reflected in the Preamble of the Constitution of India and said that the Preamble lays down the most important national goals such as socialism, secularism and national integration and also speaks of various aspects ranging from sovereignty and democracy, liberty, equality and justice.
Stressing on the importance of the Preamble, he said, it signifies that the actual power lies in the hands of people and our preamble has given us Justice, Liberty of thought and expression. He also advised that the Preamble as well as Fundamental Duties should be incorporated in every academic brochure of the University so as to make students aware of their constitution.
Dwelling on the fundamental rights and duties of the citizens, Justice Singh said both needs to be followed simultaneously as the rights cannot exist without duties. “It is our duty to uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of our nation assume paramount importance” added Justice Singh. He further said that in the vast country like India, made of the people of different races, castes, religions, languages, communities, etc. the need for maintaining national unity and integrity is of primary importance.
Justice J. P. Singh also deliberated on the State Accountability Act and discussed the salient features of the Act and also asked the civil society to be conscious about their rights and duties.
Prof. S. K. Sharma, former State Information Commissioner in his lecture on the Constitution of India dwelt on the history of the Constitution of India. He emphasized on the importance of the fundamental rights and duties given by the Constitution of India to its citizens and also gave an overview of the basic features of the Constitution including Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles of State Policy, Fundamental Duties, independence of Judiciary and Emergency Provisions.
He also stressed that there should be a harmonious relationship between Executive Judiciary and Legislature.
There was also an interactive session wherein the speakers responded to the queries of the students.
In his Presidential remarks, Prof. R. D. Sharma expressed his gratitude to the Speakers for enlightening the masses about the importance of the day and asked all the functionaries of the University to that the celebrations of the Constitution Day of J&K on 17th November and the Constitution Day of India on 26th November should be a regular feature every year.
Prof. Sharma said that our constitution holds a special relevance as it has given us many rights and duties and we should have self-introspection to understand these rights and duties. He further said that we should always stand by the principles laid by the constitution of India.
Earlier in his welcome address, Prof. P. K. Srivastava, Dean Students Welfare, University of Jammu introduced the Speakers to the august gathering and also highlighted the importance of the Constitution day.
A formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Director, The Law School and the proceedings of the function were conducted by Dr. Savita Nayyar. Among others present on the occasion include, Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Archana Kesar, Dean Research Studies, Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof. V. D. Singh, Director, DDE, Sh. J. K. Sharma, Director, CDC, heads of various departments, faculty members, officers, staff, scholars and students.
