COAS, Dalbir Singh & GOC in C NC, Gen DS Hooda, honour Photo Division officials of DPR
at Kargil War Memorial near Drass


Drass (Ladakh), July 26, (Scoop News)-Col Basu Deb Maitra, Hony-Retd, Ex-Director and Lt Col Dipak Das, Hony-Retd, Ex- Deputy Director (Photo) of Photo Division, Directorate of Public Relations (DPR), Ministry of Defence,were honoured at Kargil War Memorial During Kargil Vijay Diwas celebration 2016 at Drass, on Tuesday.

They were honoured by Chief of Army Staff General, Dalbir Singh, on Monday and by Lt Gen DS Hooda, GOC-in-C Northern Command, on Tuesday.

Both the officers paid floral tributes to the martyrs and brave soldiers during wreath laying ceremony held at Kargil War Memorial at Drass on Tuesday. Later they presented few historic signature photographs of Kargil War to the Army commander Lt Gen DS Hooda, GOC Fire and Fury Corps and GOC Forever in Ops Division at Drass.

on Monday, both the retred officers from Defence Public Relations (DPR) were introduced to the Chief of Army Staff Gen Dalbir Singh by the Army Cdr himself and was briefed about the contribution by them including other officers from Photo Division of DPR, MoD.

The Photo Division of DPR, MoD was tasked for visual coverage the Kargil Operations in 1999 and Lt Col Das was first to reach Drass and Kargil before any media reached on the spot. He nearly escaped death while climbing Tololing. He was also with Capt Vikram Batra , PVC (Posth) and with Capt Kenguruse MVC (Posth) during thier last assault.

A National Photo Awardee and personally praised by the then Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his photos were published in National and International newspapers, magazines including Time and Janes Defence Weekly.

The unsung heroes of Photo Division of DPR, MoD which includes also Lt Col HS Bobde, Hony-Retd, Ex- Deputy Director (Photo) Chief PRO, MoD, Mumbai, Maj Vimal Kumar Singh, Hony, present Deputy Director (Photo), HQ DPR and Maj SD Rokade, Hony, present Deputy Director (Photo) Chief PRO, MoD, Mumbai, made invaluable contributions towards making the success of OP VIJAY immortal not only leaving an impression in the minds and memories of the world but also in the official National archives.

Their sincerity of purpose, dedication to duty immensely contributed in projecting heroic deeds and image of our soldiers as well as Armed Forces during Kargil War in 1999.

The photos clicked by these ace photographers were also published in the Annual Reports of Ministry of Defence for the years 1999 and 2000. Their works are used in almost all the coffee table books published by various units and formation Headquarters of Northern Command besides various authors and retd officers.

“It is certainly be a historic and nostalgic moment in my life to stand at the foothill of mighty Tololing peak after so many years where I escaped death narrowly from Pakistani firing during Kargil war in 1999” said Lt Col Das. He also narrated emotionally about his days with martyred Capt Vikram Batra, PVC and coverage in Gun Hill operations.

Col Maitra said “ we are very grateful to Indian Army and specially to Army Cdr Lt Gen DS Hooda who himself recognized our contributions after 17 years and invited us”.

He also added that we felt very proud to pay floral tribute to our martyrs here and promised that along with all other officers of DPR, he would come in Kargil Vijay Diwas celebration at Drass in 2017.

Both of them said that it is a great day for DPR we were proud being a part of DPR, MoD....
