| DC Samba urges religious, social organizations to support BBBP campaign | |
Samba, August 26 (Scoop News)- Deputy Commissioner Samba, Sheetal Nanda today called upon the social and religious organizations to support Beti Bachao Beti Padao(BBBP) campaign in their respective areas.
She was speaking at a meeting of civil society members, religious heads and representatives of NGOs to sensitize and make them aware about the objectives of Beti Bachao Beti Padao(BBBP) campaign in the district.
SSP Joginder Singh, ACD Tilak Raj, CEO O.P Bhagat, DSWO Mushtaq Choudhary and other members of the District Task Force, BBBP were also present in the meeting. It is pertinent to mention that Samba has Child sex ratio of 787(0-6 years) as per 2011 census which is one of the lowest in the country.
The DC stressed upon improvement of the gender ratio adding it is one of the powerful indicators of the society’s health while the imbalance reflects the unequal position of women in society. She outlined the broad spectrum of the scheme which involves mass communication campaign and survival, protection and education of the girl child. She called for empowerment of the women in the society and eradication of illegal practices like dowry as it being one of the main reasons that a girl is seen as liability. She said that efforts will be made to re-enroll the girl drop outs and urged the participants to support the District Administration in view of their extensive outreach and acceptability in the society. She assured them of full support for conducting awareness programmes.
The participants were informed about the steps being taken by the District Administration for a successful campaign and suggestions were sought from them. They were informed about Gudi Gudda Board, Sub Division Task Force and BBBP campaign to be launched in the district. They were also informed about Ladli Beti and Marriage Assistance schemes introduced by the government for poor girls in the district.
The DC also urged the people to give information about any occurrence of sex determination/female foeticide in their areas. She said the whistle blower would be given a reward of Rs 50000 for the information.
The members from religious and social organizations suggested that more focus should be laid on female education in rural areas. They assured their full support for bringing a positive change in public mindset.
