Authorities declare closure of 495 km long Leh- Manali road officially



Leh, October 15, (Scoop News)-Fearing sudden snowfall on high mountains passes along 495 kilometre long road between Leh and Manali, the authorities on Saturday officially declared closure of the highway for vehicular traffic till next spring.


Advising the travelers on the route to take extra precaution and drive only in case of necessity as some stretches of the road are covered with several layers of frozen ice particularly in shady areas. Surprisingly, vehicular traffic continues even after the road is officially closed.


Reports reaching here suggest, the water sources along the route are frozen, several layers of ice has accumulated on the road at Pang, Taglanga-la and Baralacha and other high altitude areas increasing the risk of veering of the vehicles off the road without covering the tyres with chains.


“It is advisable to avoid ones travel on this route now. It is frost biting cold on high mountain passes and the travelers have to encounter thick sheets of ice spread near water resources across large stretches of route,” said officials engaged with the maintenance of highway.


The temperature is constantly dipping and mountains can expect snowfall anytime which may trap vehicles at isolated places far away from help. In past several such incidents had put people in trouble because of weather between Taglang-la and Rothang changes unpredictably and so quickly.


On Leh- Srinagar highway, sudden snow blizzard near Zojila had claimed dozens of human lives and damaged scores of vehicles in mid 80’s....
