SKUAST-J organized training on rejuvenation of old senile orchards


Bhaderwah., February 17, (Scoop News)- Scientists of Regional Horticulture Research Sub-station, Bhaderwah of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) conducted one day training programme on ‘Rejuvenation of old senile orchards in apple and almond’ at Sartingal Bhaderwah. The training programme was organized under the esteemed guidance of Prof. Pradeep K. Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-J and Prof. J. P Sharma, worthy Director Research of SKUAST-J, in which about twenty orchardists of Sartingal village of Bhaderwah, participated.
Dr. Mahital Jamwal, Principal Investigator of the ICAR Network Project on Outreach of Technologies of Temperate Fruit Crops, apprised the farmers about the technology for rejuvenation of old and senile orchards of apple and almond in the region. He elaborated the farmers that the old orchards of apple and almond are getting unproductive in the area and rejuvenation and top working are the promising horticultural practices for converting them into productive ones since these techniques require less time as compared to fresh plantation in reaching commercial production using their well established plant systems. Dr. Neeraj Kotwal told the participants about different plant protection measures to be taken care of against insect-pests and diseases while rejuvenating old apple and almond trees. Dr. Rohit Sharma suggested timely application of manures and fertilizers to obtain optimum production from apple and almond trees and to keep them healthy for longer time. Bhaskar Singh, Senior Research Fellow emphasized upon the use of improved varieties of apple and almond for their existing systems, use of pollinizers and bee hives in the orchards to improve tree productivity. He told the participants that converting low yielding and inferior quality old trees into superior and high yielding trees through rejuvenation technique increases tree vigor and improves economic age of old trees. Kashmir Singh (FCLA) assisted the training programme at the farmer's field.
The orchardists thanked SKUAST-J for dissemination of latest horticultural technologies and imparting technical guidance to the orchardists of remote areas of Jammu province.
