Rev Gyalwang Drukpa presents painting of lord Avalokiteshvara to Vietnam
largest Tongka unfurled at Tay Thein Grand Mandala Stupa
Leh/Vietnam, March 18, (Scoop News International Monitoring Desk)-Over 100 of Buddhist monks and nuns from India are participating in three day long 2nd India Buddhist Cultural Day celebrations in Vietnam. Over 70,000 people from all over Vietnam and across the world attended the ceremonies which concluded on Saturday.


The event has been organized jointly by Vietnam- India Friendship Association, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and the Indian Embassy in Vietnam to celebrate 45 years of diplomatic ties and over a decade of Comprehensive Strategic partnership between the two countries.


The ceremonies for this year’s event was held at the Thein Pagoda in Tam Dao district in the northern province of Vietnam in presence of an Indian Buddhist leader, Gyalwang Drukpa, head of Drukpa lineage as chief guest along with the Indian Ambassador to Vietnam.


The highlight of this year’s event was the presentation of one of the world’s largest religious painting of Lord Avalokiteshvara, the silk embroidered brocade painting depicting the thousand armed lord in the middle, Manjushria in the bottom on right side and Vajrapani on the left side by Gyalwang Drukpa to the people of Vietnam.


The other Buddha deities included from Vajrayana and Mahayana traditions are also portrayed in the painting.


The painting is also known as Thongdrol in Himalayas is 12 metre by 16 metre in size and is made from brocades and top quality silk threads and weighs over 100 kilograms.


It was crafted by over 40 artisans who worked on it for about six months for the event in Vietnam. It was unfurled at Tay Thein Grand Mandala Stupa.


Tran Chien Thang, vice chairman of the Vietnam Record Association acknowledged the painting and also certified it to be the largest Buddhist painting in Vietnam. ...
